Beruldsen -> Finally ... Axis Decisive Victory (1/27/2017 2:33:26 PM)

After a million re-starts I finally achieved an Axis Decisive Victory in December of 1946. I opted to completely defeat Russia before setting my sights on England. Here's a few things I did.
1. I opted to NOT accept Vichy. I was still able to launch an attack on Russia in April '41 and Spain fairly quickly joined the Axis.
2. I pulled back the African troops to Tunisia and created a small line of forts. Along with the Afrika Corps I waited for the British troops to attack. In less than 6 turns you can completely destroy the British force and then the road to Cairo and the Middle East oil fields are wide open.
3. My attack of Russia was pretty typical ... north, central and south. Keiv fell first (late summer of '41 ... then Leningrad in Feb '42. I waited for my heavy tanks to take Moscow in late '42. At this point I shifted my focus to the Russian oil fields. Along the way Turkey joined the Axis (early '44). It was something when my southern troops joined up with Rommel in the south.
4. After the fall of Moscow the capital moved to Kuybyshey ... it was slow going. When this capital fell the capital moved to Perm. By the time to reached the outskirts of Perm Russian National Morale fell to zero and Russia surrendered (winter of '45).
5. In France I used German and Italian Engineers to create a string of forts just in front of Paris and along the rivers creating a box in the NW corner. The allied invasion happened in the spring of '44. The line was defended by Spanish troops on one side and a small 3-4 German armies and German 3-4 corps. I placed my anti air and rockets in support. I added some armor after the invasion and the after 6-8 months the invasion was repulsed.
6. I should add I believe the allied invasion was not successful is because I moved all my naval units into the Atlantic and created a screen and picked off dozens (probably an exaggeration) of American and Canadian troop transports. The German naval units were moved after taking out the Russian naval units in the Baltic and the Italian units were moved after I took out the 2 Brit aircraft carriers.
7. I moved all my armor, air and paratroops back west. This took a while. I launched an invasion (7-8 armor and an HQ) in the fall of '46 along with my paratroops. London fell in a few turns...game over with only a few turns to spare.
8. I always tried to add research almost every turn and even the Italians, with research, can field some decent air units.

In summary...this game was a ton of fun ... easily one of the best war games I've played. I found the AI to be competent and surprising...and those Russians just don't quit. I had to move troops around a lot to counter the AI counter attacks.
The scope of the game is perfect ... reflecting the entire European theatre. I like how you're restricted to building certain types of units.

In the future ... I'd like to see ...
1. A bigger map (France sure is crowded in the beginning)
2. Stacking of air and ground units ... more of an issue in the west
3. Slower tech tree with more options
4. Improved naval combat ... encounters, retreats sub dives etc.
5. Improved mobility of HQs ... in the beginning they just couldn't keep up. Perhaps specific Air HQs too.

Sure was fun ... now what do I do ... oh yeah ... play as the Allies!

I would agree with points 3 and 4, but stacking would change the game too much and I already find the map larger than I feel comfortable with for a grand strategy game, CEAW has far fewer hexes!
