Is there a detailed combat resolution formula available? Outside of the Attack and Defense values shown on the Unit Combat Numbers for Soft Hard Tank etc. does the Unit Type come into play in some different aspect? I am trying to build a variant campaign and I need to understand the specific workings to do unit balancing.

Hi

Each unit type belongs to a Target type category, and they are used against each other, so if for example we have a Soft unit being attacked by a Tank one, then the Tank (as the attacker) uses its Soft Attack value. The defender uses its Tank Defense value.

There are of course other factors in the combat such as supply, experience, morale, the defender's entrenchment and terrain.

Pages 82-89 of the Manual as well as the first set of Reference Tables at the end of it should help here.

Thanks Bill,

Other than looking at the tables as a reference and guideline, is the formulation algorithm available?

It's at the bottom of the left hand column of page 88, not forgetting the variability in the system which is explained on page 89 in section 7.29.8

Is there any more detail available about the effect terrain has on combat? Apart from the river crossing penalties, I've not been able to find any information on this. e.g. what units are best for attack/defending cities and fortresses and what are the actual modifiers?

Bill, thanks again for your response. The charts do help, but I think I am not clear in my request. From the manual, the phrase below:

Actual combat losses are a complex calculation based on the following: § Unit Type § Experience § Supply § Strength § Unit Morale § HQ Command Rating § HQ Experience § Entrenchment Value § Terrain Defense Bonus

So, is the complex calculation available to be shared?

Terrain and Resources provide defensive bonuses to units occupying them.

I don't have a document listing them, but possibly the easiest way to see them is via the Editor, opening one of the official campaigns and going to:

Campaign - Edit Defense Bonus Data

Hi

I don't have anything extra that isn't already included there. All I can suggest is perhaps to look at real cases from the game and work through the calculation above using those as examples.

Okay, I'll do that and see if I can figure things out, though would have been nice to have had this in the manual
