tcarusil -> A Bridge Too Far (2/5/2017 4:16:40 PM)

The movie was on TV last week, so I was inspired to play, Holland, A Bridge Too Far, 1944. I got my British Airborne units on the ground around Arnhem, and moved south to place the 82nd around Nijmegen. That's when my problems started.

I picked a unit, boarded it on aircraft and tried to pick a spot to place it, but none would work. I tried a different unit, got it to accept a spot for the drop, heard the transport audio, but no units appeared on the map. They also disappeared from the airfield. I have tried this with a number of units, and get one of the two results described above.

What have I done wrong?

All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

TomC

Howdy Klink:

I am using version 3.4.1.9 (wish I was using version 4)

I will give Telumar's scenario a whirl. He seems to have disappeared from TOAW-land. Too bad, he contributed quite a bit.

I have been away from TOAW for about 5 months. With nothing but promises of version 4, I went looking for something new. I have been trying to learn tactical thinking with John Tiller's Panzer Battles - Battles of Normandy. Have not quite got the hang of it, but am making progress.

The only other big thing is my wife went on a diet, so that means I am on a diet too. I've lost some weight, but the work for prepping the meals is a bear for her.

What have you been up to? Coming to America this year, or do you risk a travel ban :) I sure hope I am wrong, but I feel like things are going to get worse.

Is that the scenario where the Airborne units start at the left side of the map all in nine high stacks ? If so, you need to juggle the units around in those start hexes because when embarked they can't negotiate the stacks unless they are less than nine units.

Thanks. I will give it a try.

Here's what I think I know.The airmobile units are on the left hand side of the screen (in airfields). Apparently, if you load a unit on the left hand side of an airfield it will not fly or will stop flying if there is a full-stack hex to the right of it. So it appears you need to start from the right side of each airfield to reduce the stacks so units to the left can fly. Similarly, if you have a full-stack hex on the main map, it may block a unit trying to fly past it. Creates a nice logistical problem to solve since there is not enough airlift capacity to land all airmobile units on the first turn.

If anyone knows more or has a better description of how to manage this, please chime in.
