bush -> great ship (2/13/2017 7:40:00 PM)

So it is Sep. of '43 and as US I just got my first Tacoma class PF, (the Long Beach.) Wow, what a great escort. Long-legged and an ASW rating of 11. I wish I had more of these coming and less of the regular DEs.

Description and ship's history:

Many of this class were manned by the USCG and transferred to the Soviet Union as the war ended. Interesting that this one ended up in the Japanese Maritime Defense Force.

Love those PFs. I wish they could be stuck in CVE TFs, though.

Cheers,
CC

Edit: I always thought it was an insult to name a lowly PF, rather than a CL or CA, after that city.

Cheers,
CC

They could've named an AO after that city, like the USS Kankakee.

The navy already had other plans:

I always wonder what was going on in the head of the designer to put such an ugly, fat Tower on a otherwise beautiful ship?[&:]

If you want to see some really ugly things, you should look here :D

Buuaa....[X(]

Ok the destroyer has some kind of an excuse, because he´s a warship with stealth technology and therefore must be constructed in that way, but the other ones...baaah.

I am shure getting the command over such a ship is special punishment or something.

Chickenboy -> RE: great ship (2/14/2017 3:27:30 PM)

It's not really a great ship. It's just a good ship.

ETA: Sorry. Thought we were talking about the HMS Lollipop.

No, we were talking about time traveling cats with laser beams shooting out of their eyes. Pay attention, man!

Or was that the other thread? Hmm...

Phased array radar requires a panel for each direction. Under the façade there are hundreds of pencil-like radar generating "fingers" that can each be aimed a few degrees one way or another. When something is detected, multiple radar fingers can lock on and track much more accurately than a traditional single source radar beam. This technology was made necessary by the advent of anti-ship missiles.

As for the tower, the USS Enterprise CVN that was just retired had the phased array panels on her tower too.

Barb -> RE: great ship (2/15/2017 6:32:35 AM)

Hehe, the Trollbas is a port tender, or general work boat, or something like that. Here is a little more about her:

That answers one of those irritating questions I have always pondered on but never took the time to research. Thanks!
