The above screen shot shows less than what the Allies actually knew of the enemy positions prior to D-Day. I don't see where that screen shot can be perceived as wanting to know everything on my part, nor does it come close to exceeding the attackers historical expectations of intelligence required for this [or any] strategic scale attack.

I am glad this was fixed. The ability to recon is still an option, but without the gamey function. I can admit cruising around with my Carriers as scouts was a bit ridiculous but it was the obvious best move under the old rules.

Maybe there's another way to think about what spotting and surprise might mean in land combat at the time and distance scale of this game.

Perhaps it would be helpful to think of spotting as not just knowing in a general way that a unit is in a hex, but having enough intel about the unit's dispositions over several square miles of terrain to mount an effective, sustained attack.

So, if FOW doesn't allow you to "see" that a hex has a unit in it, yet you suspect there is, then charging into that hex might be best understood not as a single ambush (games-turns cover days after all) but as a series of very hasty, ill-informed attacks based on limited intel about the enemy unit's exact dispositions.
