Rob61 -> artillery correction (2/17/2017 12:09:55 AM)

Just wondering is there anyway to correct my OBA fire.
It seems that every time I use OBA it never lands where I aim it.
I then have to wait two fire missions. Then reconnect radio and try again. If radio contact is made I
fire at same target and get fire drift again. So is there something I am missing to correct my fire support?

UP844 -> RE: artillery correction (2/17/2017 12:50:06 AM)

You are not missing anything: there is no way at all to correct OBA. You call it and you hope it does not drift too much (it usually does [:(]) and does not land among your troops.

I have never carried out fire tests to assess the "accuracy" of OBA as they would require a lot of tests to obtain significant data (approx. 100 fires). My rough estimate is that OBA lands in the intended hex 1 time in 10.

I managed to hit my officer that called in the arty today....killing him and a squad. lol I was playing Hitdorf on the Rhine, Germans just got reinforced and my officer had a wonderful view of them straight down the road. Well my Lt. should of studied a little more because his arty mission which was called in 10 hexes away fell directly on his head killing him and a squad supporting him. I won the mission but found this to be bad luck..poor training. This was my first battle with arty that poor most of the time I atleast hit closer to the enemy.

I would like to see a spotting round then make a correction for 'fire for effect'

Just a quick observation, the listed minimum safe distance on a 81mm mortar is about 330m. That's a modern value to boot. Leathal burst is about 40m in diameter and estimate maybe 120m diameter to still be dangerous. That would say that a round has about 100m radius scatter (that value being a rough average not knowing range of the shot, crew quality, visibility to spotting round, weather/wind, etc.). So the screen shot above puts both the enemy and friendly units in the barrel for getting hit.

As a caveat, I'm not sure how indirect fire from off map is being modeled and what factors impact the games scatter and spotting corrections. I'm just pointing out some information so folks get an idea that it's not a laser guided bomb. [8D]

An other question?[:D]

CapnDarwin -> RE: artillery correction (3/1/2017 1:03:59 PM)

That would give a good short range bound under ideal conditions. That dispersion will increase with range (up to 4km) and the other factors. Again, without understanding how the game models indirect, it's hard to tell what factors are being applied. It does sound like certain indirect fire systems may be too random in the amount of dispersion seem. It also appears that you can call in danger close fires without a warning as well.

As a side note, where did you find that data? We are always looking for good sources (even in non-English languages). [8D]

1 - The Brandt mle 27/31 mortar was a regulation weapon of the French army during the Second World War. Designed by Edgar
Brandt, it was a refinement of the Stokes mortar. The Brandt mortar was highly influential, being licensed built or
copied by numerous countries.
The 81 mm is frenchie!

2- 60m en portée == <--- ---> x (not multiplicate here!) 40m en direction(north, north-est, est...)
so not 4km but <100m with observer of course.

3- I didn't find data, data find me![:D]

dox44 -> RE: artillery correction (3/1/2017 2:26:39 PM)

i have run several test scenarios. saved scenario at point i called in OBA and ran
it over and over and over-a little more than 120 times. Okay i do a lot baseball stats
so i know mendoza just hit .350 for the month of April but i got weary. so this test
may only be a little better than anecdotal evidence but I quit using OBA.

half test was at 8 hexes...half at 10. i think thats too close but realistic for
game purposes. don't have all data in front of me.

but success rate was about 30%. actually getting OBA for fire.

a little less than half of that 30% hit within 2 hexes of target i specified.

25% of the time it landed on friendlies. led me to believe don't use it
within 8-10 hexes. good luck with that

30% it was outside the 2 hexes but killing bunnies...not hitting enemy but more importantly
missing me.

rest was connected but no battery fire--whatever that's called in gam

i've done more but i quit using OBA.

BloodyBill76 -> RE: artillery correction (3/1/2017 2:40:01 PM)

A spotting round than correction like in ASL would be cool.

CapnDarwin -> RE: artillery correction (3/1/2017 2:56:23 PM)

That 8-10 hexes makes sense with a min distance of 300 to 340 meters for a safe call in. Tough to use off map fires on such a small tactical footprint.
