At the risk of harkening the ghost of Ravinhood (you do remember Ravinhood?!?!) it is a shame that Matrix/Slitherine doesn't produce games like the Tin Soldiers series anymore. I spend more time playing board games these days and I can't help to feel it is because the newer games really lack the element of innovation and fail to capture what a great number of us here originally came to Matrix for; turned based, deep, polished games that had a distinct board game flavor. I recently got Command and Colors to the table and remembered how much I enjoyed both Tin Soldiers games. Loaded up Julius Caesar and was amazed at how well it has aged and how much fun it still is. This isn't really a rant, more my lament at growing old and the PC wargame hobby passing me by...

Either you have overlooked or otherwise missed some of the newer games or you may have nostalgia goggles on your head. Or let me put it this way: are Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe, Order of Battle, War in the West, and Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa any worse games than those that came out before them?

No actually, I haven't missed them (own three of them you mentioned). Totally enjoy SC3, thoroughly enjoyed Decisive Campaigns, War in the West was just too much and Order of Battle doesn't appeal to me. But, in your response I noted that they are all WW2 games. Maybe it is "nostalgia goggles", maybe I am getting old. But maybe not...maybe I am just looking for something that captures my imagine and conveys the joy of a good, turn based, ancients board game?

i havent played the tin soldiers games - i have often almost bought them but then relented, thinking that maybe the Great Battles Collections that i have are satisfactory enough... however are they at all similar to Pike and Shot? Pike and Shot is such good fun!

Yes, I have been on the cusp of purchasing at least 20 times, but, the last time decided to wait for the next version. As for the AGEOD games; I gave up on them as the battle aspect was just to unsatisfying and way too under the hood. Again, I would kill for something more akin to Tin Soldiers!
