Revthought -> Hybrid Carriers (3/5/2017 6:21:28 PM)

These are not in the stock game, well besides the Japanese seaplane carriers, but they are in RA, BTS, and Focus Pacific. As someone who made it a couple months into a BTS PBEM and is now in a Focus Pacific PBEM I have a question for you guys.

I plan on converting my hybrid carriers to full CVLs in my game as soon as possible, but did note that a player could chose not to and continue to have their hybrid carriers upgraded on there own late into the war. I guess my question would be, can any of you see an advantage in not converting them and leaving those gun turrets on them?

Unless you plan on doing broad sides with them, I'd convert them. Better carrying capabilities and more useful....GP

Playing both BTS and FP, I say convert them as soon as you can. A size 15 CVL is not very useful, but a size 30 is.

I love the hybrids and they were more effective when we first introduced them. They were so effective that I had to reduce their ammo supply so they weren't as effective in surface fighting and then reduced their sorties to retard their CV effectiveness. Choosing to convert them is the LOGICAL choice but I love to give players options. This is why the upgrades are still there.

EDIT: Really used effective too many times above!

Oh, I'm 100% with you guys. Just curious if anyone had a differing opinion.

Those hybrid carriers are still useful for island bombardment if you get the chance.

That seems way to scary. I would be putting future CVLs in a lot of risk for some bombardment damage. I suppose it would increase the crews night XP.

That late in the war I put ASW assets on the ships and use them to bombard enemy coastal airfields with the intent to destroy planes at night.
Of course they must be protected.
IMHO otherwise they are book ends.

In both the mods I've encountered the hybrid carriers you can convert them to full CVLs rather early (starting in 2/42). Seems silly to not do so to be honest, this the genesis of the thread. So I don't think they have to be bookends, since by mid-1942 they can be fast CVLs that carry the same number of aircraft as the British CVs at the cost of a little shipyard time and their turrets.

HIGHLY Useful either way they are used.

I saw the American 1931 variant picture in Warships After Washington and that got my interest. When I read my Jentschura and saw that the Japanese looked at them I was hooked. They HAD to be added! If interested the book Hybrid Warships is a fascinating read. It is expensive but interesting.

traskott -> RE: Hybrid Carriers (3/8/2017 2:46:05 PM)

I can't convert them xDDD

Dunno what version I have of the mod, but stuck with them as hybrids. As allied, I find them very useful escorting my main convoys...

m10bob -> RE: Hybrid Carriers (3/10/2017 2:22:43 PM)

Most of my opinion is based on the fact I am playing the RHS mod.
Japan only has "x" amount of assets and drydock space and the planes within this mod have (IMHO) a better ASW capability for aircraft which might be carried on those hybrids.
I am just very leery of putting Japanese ships anywhere near Allied air assets as they will NEVER have a decent AA capability.
I use them for bombardment off the coast of China where I might inflict damage, when possible.

Of course that war taught us carriers are a better war asset than BB's...but I have seen too many games when the Japanese run out of planes and end up sailing with less than full complement.

Revthought -> RE: Hybrid Carriers (3/10/2017 4:41:45 PM)

Well I noticed that, at least in Focus Pacific, the hybrid carriers are not available when creating bombardment TFs. So it does not seem these ships can be used this way in said mod.

John 3rd -> RE: Hybrid Carriers (3/11/2017 12:16:38 AM)

Think the game codes them as CVLs instead of CLs. That is why someone says my CLV or CAV got hit and they say...WHAT? [:D]

The mods are one of the nicest features of this game, and the forums have so many very knowledgeable people eager to help game-wise or history-related matters.

My comments ref the ASW planes on these ships were not meant to say to use the ships offensively as sub hunter "bases", but that the ships themselves are big sub targets by proxy and NEED their own anti sub element.
