When winter has come?

I have been playing against the AI, but wanted to get your opinions.

What do you do when winter arrives? Do you sit and wait.. Do you set TOE low? Do you send troops back to Berlin? Do you say screw it and still attack?

No idea -> RE: What do you do... (3/13/2017 4:50:43 PM)

Simply look for som good defensive line and start digging a one or two weeks before snow comes. Garrison your panzer units at cities not far from the front, that way attrition wont be as damaging. By then your railway should be extended enough so that if some breakthough happens you can quickly take your panzer units to seal the gap.

Sit and wait, withdraw Panzer forces and use them as mobile reserves to seal any gaps created. Get your HQ's to where they will be needed also make sure to properly reinforce AGS as your Axis allies are going to be CRUSHED during the winter months. Change up your air doctrine, usually I just sit every aircraft I have but its a matter of debate. I usually stop my offensives in the last week of September and start digging in at that point, by November the counter-offensive will begin and it will make or break your campaign.

With reduced blizzard option "on" rinse and repeat this formula but instead of last turn of September, make it 2nd turn of October.

Make sure to read the weather graphs in the manual, it'll help you prepare for bad and (sometimes) good weather. Also don't be afraid to retreat, remember you do have some room to play with and if you play your cards right, you could end up with some "crazy salients" that can be exploited in '42. Be wise about which units you put into static mode, I do it for whichever front is not going to be going on a major '42 offensive (personally just for myself this is USUALLY AGN, as I always rush for Leningrad at the onset but everyone's style is different.)

Sending to the rear a few of your highest morale infantry divisions can be a good idea, once the high 1941 morale is lost it does not go up again. Well fortified units should be able to resist pretty well and even resume offensive by the end of winter But you do not have enough units to hold everywhere so you have to make some choice. If you avoid fighting the soviets army will grow out of hand anf will too big for a 1942 offensive. keeping the rumanians or at least some of them back may be a good option. If you leave them in the frontline they'll suffer heavy losses that will be difficult to replace due to armament shortages and manpower will be piling up in the pool.

starting fortifying in september is an option. Or you may use the 3 turns of november for a renewed offensive with the aim of weakenig front line soviet forces so that they won't be in a condition to attack in the first turns od december. The soviets recieve a lot of new units in that require a lot of manpower so many front line units may end up unready or still routed and you may gain some additioanal ground for retreat.

imho starting pocket battles in the last 4 turns of winter before blizzard is risky. it would be better to start deliberate attacks against soviet weak spots where good results are guaranteed.

this way you do not expose your units in blizzard and still can cause some damage to enemy MP and moral while boosting your own troops moral. and you can start the blizzard in well fortified positions instead of open and unfortified areas because of some pockets.

if you try to pocket russian forces and he can manage to open the pocket bringing back the troops in their starting position will be a nightmare.
