RealChuckB -> Question re Op Husky scenario (Allies) (4/5/2017 8:16:05 AM)

Hi,

Two quick questions (playing as Allies):

1. When (if ever) do you ship the Army HQ (7th US and 8th BR) to Sicily? It feels strange to land them with the first wave but I guess they are not much use if they stay behind?

2. What do you do with the US Provisional Corps that has no GUs attached? I assume you could attach GUs that are directly attached to 7th Army but would that make sense?

Thanks - any insight (and background) is highly appreciated!

while since I've played it. But get the armies over as soon as you can - the commander stats will help out the corps etc so I'd say by T3 - the stage when you will probably be dealing with the first organised axis defensive positions.

If I recall, you have a lack of corps command capacity - both overall and geographic (its a while since I played the scenario so this might be wrong), so the provisional corps gives you a useful boost. Whether its worth adding support units in part depends on how you will use it - if its just to chase down Italian units/cities in the SW corner then probably not - better to get the SUs into the other formations. If you are going to take on say Palermo with it, then yes worth boosting its combat effectiveness.

For the most part combat SUs (ie not construction engineers) at the army level are a bit of a waste.

Hi Loki,

Really appreciate your feedback. I'm bringing over II Corps HQ (US) with the initial landing and will use this corps to do the heavier lifting in the NE and will likely attach the units that will drive NW to the provisional corps to drive to Marsala. I have to think about Palermo. The NW task force may not be strong enough for that but I don't want the II Corps to get bogged down ...

My main concern with leaving 7th Army HQ in Africa, though, is that Patton will probably freak out and slap someone [:D]

Hi Loki,

One quick follow-up: I read your last sentence as the recommendation to assign combat SUs from the HQ army level to the HQ corp level. In the beginning of the scenario, there are a lot of combat SUs assigned to 7th Army HQ (especially armor, engineers, and armor).
I guess it would be best to assign them to the two Corps HQ prior to them being shipped to Sicily, correct? And I guess that would also mean that these HQs would then need more transport (and port) capacity - if so, how do I know how much would be too much?

Thanks a lot

loki100 -> RE: Question re Op Husky scenario (Allies) (4/6/2017 7:27:22 AM)

yes to your first question as you can only transfer army-corps if on the same land mass.

But you are right about the need to watch the transport/port load issue.

If you want to work it out Red Lancer's one page guides will give you the tools. But I'd do it pragmatically. Move a couple, save and test the result. If its all still ok, move a couple more and so on. Once you feel you have hit capacity problems stop.

More pragmatically, you won't really need them till the second phase of operations. While historically the Allies feared a German counter-attack in game neither the AI nor a human opponent will risk this. So get ashore, and the axis will mostly fall back to screen Palermo and around Catania-Etna.

Its at that stage the extra combat power comes in useful.

One thing to avoid (I've done this and it was soooo annoying), don't attach any SUs direct to the divisions before the invasion, you'll lose prep pts and possibly the ability to move them [;)]

Loki,

Thanks again for the not only very fast but very detailed response, I really appreciate it. I have assigned the SUs I thought were useful and made a successful landing with everyone in Sicily (which, by itself, is not a huge accomplishment ... now for the hard part)
