Fallschirmjager -> Download accelerator (5/4/2003 11:26:30 PM)

Does anyone know of a good download accelerator for broadband?

About the only thing I request of it is that its free and reliable

thanks

Download accelator? Hmm...arent they all fakes? About the only thing you can do to speed up your d/l is set the packet size to suit your connection and get a download program (i.e getright) that ables you to d/l the same file from many sites at the same time maximising your bandwith.

Erik Rutins -> Suggestion... (5/5/2003 1:45:18 AM)

Try the tweaks and the Optimizer at www.speedguide.net, they generally know what they're talking about. :)

This is pretty much what im asking for
I went from DSL to cable and windows default download program sucks

It gets about 15 k/sec on most sites
I used to get 200 on average

Ill look on that site...thanks

Is that a shared cable access? What kind of DSL line did you have before? Itīs most probably not a problem of the "windows default download programm" ;) btw.

Thereīs plenty of things that are responsible for bad transfer speeds, like drivers, your ISP, modem hardware, if the connection is a shared one, the servers speed you access, routes to the server you want to access etc. etc. etc., but itīs seldomly the "windows default download programm".

Most of these so called "download accelerator" are nonsense and adding to this for most of the time spyware. Thereīs nothing so called "download accelerator" do, that you canīt "fix" yourself.

What they said, especially about the "accelerator" progs. GetRight is good enough for most purposes - I can even force it to suck down embedded movies and audio streams. Takes a few small forevers to get, say, the broadband version of one of the Animatrix eps, but once started I can go to bed and let it go, since it'll reconnect if needed. (I'm at 56k.. yechh.)

Sounds (from my admittedly limited experience) more like something with the cable: neighbourhood useage, bad cable, laggy connect through the cable company hardware/servers... try it at weird o'clock on a weekday, see if perhaps less users (one would *expect* so ) make a diff.

What kinds of download bandwiths did the previous DSL and the cable your using now have? Where i live you can get a cheaper cablecon that gives only 30k/s d/l but the one i use is 70k/s. The 200k/s DSL must have bin quite eh uber though.(and expensive)
What they said, especially about the "accelerator" progs. GetRight is good enough for most purposes
Getright is a download manager, it does not accelerate downloads ;).

Well, actually it does cos you can optimize your download bandwith.;) One site rarely gives max d/l.

Erik Rutins -> Response... (5/6/2003 1:17:45 AM)

The site I noted has some registry tweaks and a TCP/IP optimizer for broadband users that, in my experience, always results in a better performing connection.

Fallschirmjager -> (5/6/2003 5:11:51 AM)

The Dsl bandwidth was rated at 1.5mbs/sec and so is my cable now

I updated the drivers and that helped...then I got get right and that helped alot more
Dling from multiple servers made all the difference

I also have the cable going through a wirless router..and I redid that and it seemed to help furthur

it appears to vary widely from website to webasite

Matrix and getright dont like each other much...so I was getting about 20 k/sec testing UV patches

I headed over to gamespot and tried a demo was was hitting 300k/sec

But im much happier with it now....ive seemed to fix it

http://www.speedbit.com/DAPDL.asp?

I've been using Download accelerator plus for over a year now with great results, I'm not sure if it is free but it sure is worth it!

I also have a cable modem and the differance is night and day when using DAP !

The way it works is it grabs all of the mirrored sites and then downloads part from each site simultainiously, I think.

Go to their web site and see what you think, they explain it clearer than I can.

Good luck!

Fallschirmjager -> (5/16/2003 9:06:22 AM)

I meant to post this

I used DAP and it out performs getright
Unfortunatly DAP is adware...but when I dl a 100k faster I dont much care

Zakhal -> (5/16/2003 3:16:04 PM)

Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) is the leading download manager/accelerator that increases download speed by up to 300 percent*.

Eh...how is that possible? Is there som turbo button that DAP presses and then suddenly the packets come down the pipe 3x as fast?

Often the download speed is actually limited by the sending server's speed. DAP looks if it can find more than one server (without delving too much into technical details) and then downloads from up to 4 servers simultanously. 4 slow servers = 1 fast server. (Simplified.)

As a sidenote DAP is spyware IIRC!

Voriax -> (5/16/2003 8:53:42 PM)

For you adware users, go to lavasoft at
http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/
and download the free adaware ad/spyware removal tool.

Your ad/spyware infested program may stop working after the adaware removes the offending componets, but there usually are equivalent programs that are both free and adfree.

Using the Windows dl program I can get 60-80 k a sec on most servers...
With Dap I can dl from up to 4 mirrors at once which means 60-80 k a sec x4

So the claim of 300% is for the most part accurate

There are some places that dont like it....the matrix servers kick me off when I try to use Dap for whatever reason
