The LCMs that arrive at Geelong late in '43 have SUCH a limited range. Is there any way to actually utilize them?

I paired them off with some of the coastal minesweepers and slowly moved them up the NG/Solomons area where they can move stuff around

Most coastal minesweepers are also very short legged.

As hinted at here, the standard technique for moving short legged craft across large bodies of waters to island groups where they can be effective is to couple them with a long legged craft for the journey.

Works for all kinds of short legged craft.
The same principal applies when you assign a 1500 endurance SC to escort a very long legged TF headed form WC to Oz.
The long legged craft refuel the short legged craft along the way.

I have often wondered why the scenario designer has the plethora of xAPc's that are assigned to SWPAC appear on the west coast.

My take has always been that these represent the cobbled together small craft that MacArthur used along the north coast of NG while the bulk of Allied landing craft was allocated to Nimitz.
Have never understood why these very short legged craft appear at WC.
It's a real pain to redeploy them.

The APc-1 class were purpose-build "small coastal transports" constructed in boat yards in CONUS. They were originally designed as "Coastal Minesweepers". Be happy they appear at the WC, because many have been build on the EC.

Most of the "small craft" in MacArthur's Navy operating in the PNG area were purchased, requisitioned and later also build locally in PNG, Oz and New Zealand.

I don't think stock scenarios have APc and small craft. DBB has APc but no small craft. Bottlenecks has both.

??
I looked at my scenario one game and there are no landing craft types appearing at Geelong, and no LCMs. There is an LSM with 5000nm range - decent.
And there is the LCT with 700nm range - a barge that can be disbanded at one base and later re-created at another, like PTs.
You can also shepherd barges with a milch cow, but that is tedious and enroute damage is common.

Can you post a ship screen of the LCMs you have?

LCMs are what you get when you deploy Landing Craft from a Commonwealth port.
At least in DBB based scenarios.

Thanks for clearing up my misperception LST.
That they enter under SWPAC command was what led me to think they might represent the landing craft Mac used in NG.

Interesting! That option is greyed out for me at Sydney (which has over 1 million supply) and at Geelong (which has 300 supply [:D]). Must be a date when that feature becomes available.

I got them at Suva in May '43 thinking I was deploying US landing craft and only got three of them as the pool had apparently only started filling with them.

Dababes does have the xAPc but I find them all but useless because they cannot load troops. They were actually used to move troops and cargo. They were designed to carry up to 70 men for 24 hours or cargo, or a mix of both. There are still a few around today in private hands. I used them until I could build landing craft and got LSTs-both are more useful.

xAPc - a grandiose designation for a fishing boat without nets or long-lines.
