Path quality also has an impact. As per the manual: "Pathfinding quality for the computer controlled units can be set to: ··HIGH – the best possible path, most CPU intensive (Default). ··MEDIUM – balance between path quality vs CPU usage. ··LOW – most rudimentary path quality, least CPU intensive. ··Pathfinding quality determines how well the computer opponent units navigate the terrain of a battlefield." So, it's a tradeoff. The way I look at it, having significant lag due to higher settings is like playing that nitpicky type of opponent that wants to stop you every time you move a single hex in order to mentally calculate every possible TEM, DRM, TC, PTC, WTF, etc possible on the spot.[:'(]
