December 39, 1944. A number of heavies shot down over Nagasaki (including a reported 6 B-29s) but it was clear weather and Scott got in some good strat bombing on the city. I'm not repairing anything so eventually I'll send the Nagasaki flak elsewhere but not yet.

December 39th, eh? Is this the extended game feature or the "hidden war" I keep hearing about?

LoL, it just seems like December 39th. :)

Well now it's 1945 and the Empire of Japan is still alive. Just 9 more months (or 12 more depending on what the victory conditions actually are) and we can finally sign that peace deal in D.C. :).

January 1st started things off quite nicely. I was able to pull off an effective shore bombardment that appears to have shut down one of the airfields that Scott was running fighter sweeps from. It was exactly 8 hexes away from Hiroshima so the Hiei was able to sprint there, shell it, and get home. I also put in every DD that was still afloat into bombardment and managed to avoid any opposition and sink 5 PFs in the bargain. It was a very lucky break!

Because I also overloaded Nagasaki with fighters hoping that Scott would run a third strat bombing mission in a row there. I have 500+ fighters there and the airfields capacity was about 250. Scott did get three fighter sweeps through from a different base (of more than 100 planes per sweep) but then the bombers started coming.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/6/2020 1:00:05 PM)

And there were very heavy losses among the PBY-Liberators and the British bombers. It also appeared that the flak was more effective likely because bombers were already damaged pressed the attack and wound up being shot down. There was almost no additional damage to Nagasaki. Good for both VPs and any reduction in his ability to blast my cities is welcome!

But, Scott's fighter sweeps did have a very positive kill ratio for him.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/6/2020 1:01:30 PM)

And the VP chart to start the year show that I'm still winning. Scott needs to pick up about 70,000 VP to bring it home.

Here is where things stand to start off the new year. First, a shout out to the pixel boys at Port Blair. They are the edge of the empire. They have a brigade, 3,200 supply points, and a mission to stand pat as long as possible.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/6/2020 1:04:40 PM)

SouthEast Asia is almost gone. I managed to extricate all of my divisions from here plus almost all the support troops while holding several allied divisions at bay. I could not get any supply to these areas so I could not hold them anyway. Now, I'll see if Saigon can delay Scott a bit longer before he can press into China in force.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/6/2020 1:07:37 PM)

Here in China I've circled the areas where the fighting continues to rage. Scott keeps pounding away with air as I've devoted most of my fighters to the HI. I think his landing near the Vietnamese boarder is a bit too late to trap anything coming from Vietnam and, hopefully, will lead no where. But, otherwise, terrain has been my friend here in Southern China. My big fear is an invasion up north in the clear terrain which would cut off my troops from resupply from Manchuria (such as it is).

I don't know if taking China back will be enough to give Scott the win or if he'll have to invade the HI.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/6/2020 1:08:40 PM)

The current resource situation. I have no idea if this is good or bad. But, I comfort myself with the more than 1 million fuel and 2.7 million supply I still have on hand.

Here are the latest engine pools.

The production screen. I think I have more than enough HI to make it to the end.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/6/2020 1:11:46 PM)

Pilot pools. The navy pilots are doing ok with their starting experience. I have about 150 navy pilots in TRACOM which has probably helped to sustain that.

And, the most destroyed aircraft by type. Sadly, this list is dominated by Japanese fighters.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/6/2020 1:22:35 PM)

Oh, and I do still hold the Marianas. I made a mistake of putting too many resources into these islands. If Scott had ever invaded them it would have been a blood bath for him (level 8 forts, AA, CD units etc...). They're worth a nice amount of VP for the allies, but not as much to make it imperative for them to be recaptured. So, now I have to worry about keeping those large garrisons in supply. Guam, in particular, seems to devour supply points even with all the units set to no replacements and no upgrades.

Supply subs have kept Marcus island well stocked and the units there have been able to replace some of their losses. It will take a major effort by Scott to capture that island and right now it's fine by me that its tying down any allied troops at all.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/9/2020 3:31:32 PM)

January 2nd has come and gone and it was notable only for the most lame Kamikaze attack I have ever seen. 39 planes screamed in on (or putt putted in on since they were older models) 5 DDs and 39 planes pancaked into the water. [8|] Otherwise, not much happened and that continues to be good news for the Empire of Japan.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/9/2020 3:33:25 PM)

Th airwar was better this past turn. Scott did fighter sweeps over Hiroshima and came out at the bottom end of the stick. He also lost two DEs to the a BB TF I had near Korea checking things out, but then the delay that imposed on me left a DD TF exposed to some bombing by him. I don't think I'll lose any ships but two DDs are in bad shape.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/9/2020 3:34:28 PM)

One of the few days when his fighter losses exceed mine! Nice to see the P-47s go down, but, I think his Corsairs are a much greater threat to me.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/10/2020 3:38:07 PM)

Another ho hum turn (which makes the Emperor smile). Scott did try night bombing with a few B-29s over Tokyo and had one shot down by flak. Our house rule will allow for unlimited night manpower bombing starting March 1st. So, I have that to look forward to.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/10/2020 3:43:28 PM)

One intersesting note. My sub here fired on (and missed) a huge convoy with APAs and LSTs. Scott also bombed the port of Fusan this turn. Is he heading for an invasion of Korea? I'm sending parts of the Manchukuo garrison down there to find out.

Do units in Korea count towards the Manchukuo garrison? The manual just says Northwest Control Zone.

Q-Ball -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/10/2020 4:21:33 PM)

Not sure on that Korea/Manchuria question, but I noticed you have tons of extra AV in Manchuria...over 4000K. Why don't you re-deploy some to China? You have plenty of PPs even if you have HR on that.

There are some high-experience Divisions in Manchuria, including the 1st, 8th, and 14th

That's an interesting point. But, frankly, I have not seen the need to put them in China. I have 37 Japanese infantry divisions there already, 3 armor divisions, and lots of brigades and regiments. There is also 3 ok Chinese divisions. Of the infantry divisions, only 10 or 11 are actually fighting. The rest are in reserve or set up in fall back positions.

So, I've left the forces in Manchuria to get ready for Soviet intervention.

BBfanboy -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/10/2020 9:35:01 PM)

IIRC, I thought the location of the Manchukuo Garrison mattered but IIRC, when I said so on this forum the guys that play Japan all the time said no, it's the HQ they are assigned to that counts, not the location. Korea Army is part of Manchukuo Command HQ, or whatever it is called.

Edit: Looked it up - Kwantung Army is the Manchukuo garrison army, including Korea Army.

Hmm, because the units I"ve pulled out of Manchuria have been reassigned to other HQ so I can putt them out (our house rule is to pay PP to pull units out of there) but I've been treating Korea and Manchuria as one and the same.

Not much this turn. Scott sent late model corsairs over Hiroshima and it shows. Back to 2-1 losses. I'm not sure I'll get anything that equals it before the end of the war. So, just keep cranking out planes. :) Right now I'm up to buidling about 21 Frank rs per day

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/11/2020 3:06:58 PM)

This was one of the few times that I've actually seen coastal forts fire on ships that are just passing through. Usually there will be a message "coastal guns fire" with no results. Here, I think it's pretty safe to assume that these are two DDs that aren't coming back.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/13/2020 3:02:06 PM)

A couple of turns of Not Much Going On. Scott is up to something sneaky, I just can't figure out what. He sent B-29s to bomb airbases near Fusan this turn and blew up some transports that are sending construction battalions home to be disbanded, but, otherwise, I don't know what he's up to.

John B. -> RE: Quisling! An AFB does Japan (No PanzerKat) (4/23/2020 10:43:36 PM)

Wow, it seems like it has been more than 10 days since I last posted something. In any event, Scott plastered my naval base at Hiroshima last turn and his bombers did not hit any of the 99 ships there except for BBs. Quite the aim they had in the face of fighters and flak and at 20,000 feet. :)

This next turn was better for the Empire of Japan. I shot down a few of his bombers and drove two tank battalions out of a hex in China. The bigger news is the invasion of Korea.
