ORIGINAL: Yaab Yesterday, I caught a glimpse of a Polish TV documentary about the Barbarossa campaign of 1941. Standard wartime footage unfolded, with a wing(?) of He-111 level bombing some target in Russia. Out of boredom I started counting bombs being dropped from the internal bay of one of the He-111s. 27 bombs! Wow, never knew it could take this many. Checked the Web and it seems the He-111 could take 32 x SC50 110lb bombs. Thirty-two bombs in the internal bay of a medium bomber. Beastly! Problem with the He-111 is that the bombs were loaded vertically, only way to load them. This limited the size of the bomb it could carry. A 110lb bomb is good for light targets or ground support, but not so much for heavier targets. It was nowhere near as effective as a B-29 and never could be. German AF was designed from the bottom up to be ground support. That was its limitation and weakness. Could not effectively operate in a strategic role.
