I am spending hours trying to learn to play this game. I read the manual, look at tutorials then go back to the game wanting to apply what i learned. It just doesnt work.

Examples: I watch the tutorials, everybody seems to have different tool bars. At least they don't look like the vanilla toolbar i'm using.

Things they do which seem effortless don't work if I try to copy them. The small toolbar that in one tutorial can easily be moved to another spot on the screen refuses to stay there, etc; etc

It is impossible to see if I control a unit or if it is the AI that controls it. Pressing on the icon doesn't appear to change anything. The icon does not light up or turns off at least not clearly.

people use custom tools and use different tool bars to suit their needs

You haven't said which toolbar you are using. As far as I know there's only two modded toolbars, there's the KS mod & Expanded Toolbar V - Grog. you would be best of using the Expanded Toolbar V - Grog it's much simpler & better than the KS mod in my opinion. Once mastered try the impressive KS mod which is a complete overhaul of the game but with a very tricky toolbar.

Make sure you only use one toolbar at a time & when you are using a toolbar mod make sure you disable the context menu in the games options-page1

Hi guys

There is also the DOW community Toolbar Link. It caters for all types of players. HITS, Birds eye camera, beginner, Grognard, etc

The toolbar is a community project and is constantly being improved. Everyone is invited to contribute.

Thanks for the help. My biggest problem is not knowing whether or not I or the AI is controlling a unit or commander.
The TC icons do not seem to react to my pressing the buttons. I would expect the button to light up when I take control and switch of when I return control to the AI (or the inverse)but they seem to be on all the time whatever I do. No visible feedback. It is not clear if my orders are sent let alone received. Is this normal or do I have a bug.
Again, I understand the concept that troops do not always do what you want them to do (that's what attracts me to the game) However, at least I want to be able to give an order.

I don't know what version toolbar you are using so I can't help you. Have you disable the context menu in the games options-page1? I've no idea what mods you are using.

The reason is that the TB is still a work in progress. It has been heavily tested over many games. On and offline with no issues. Everyone who asks gets it. There will be a public link soon. We are adding music, maps and more formations.

I have tried all of the available toolbars and this is the best for me.

If you need any assistance then please let me know. We have a mature group of knowledgeable SOW players. We also have our own dedicated Teamspeak channel for voice chat. This can help a lot with trouble shooting and tutorials.

Got it thanks, I've joined your website & hope to give you some input if I get the urge to play the game again, the cavalry problem has put me of the game to be honest.[&:]

roy64 - you should give the latest version of the KS Mod another try. Cavalry are not only fixed but now very dangerous; the AI has been overhauled as well and is also less forgiving. Our team is currently still working on AI (both unit and divisional deployments) and has begun doing some map modding as well.
