According to "Comming Soon" http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/851677-wwii-film-midway-to-be-directed-by-roland-emmerich

Roland Emmerich is going to be directing a new movie on the battle of Midway.

I am skeptical that it will be better than the one we already have...

What, a Chinese production company making a movie, with the director of Independence Day at the helm? What could go wrong?!? [8|]

My cynical take: two options, as follows.

1. Show the historical battle, details of air search, planning, tactics, and actual operations. But a generally historically illiterate audience won't know the background, either on a large scale (why was each side fighting WW2) or a smaller scale (Doolittle Raid, Coral Sea), in order to understand why each side was there, what forces they had, and what their objectives were.

2. Planes! Ships! Subs! Bombs! Torpedoes! Enhanced with CGI!! And, for good measure, throw in a love triangle, because ... Hollywood.

Guess which one is more likely? [8|]

Maybe he read Shattered Sword.

Emmerich is a specialist for catastrophic movies...

I just wonder how he will manage to blow up the White House in this one.. again.. [:D]

The Stargate will open and Kurt Russell will come to the rescue!

No maybe.

Argh, I'm going back to watching The Final Countdown, no historical pretense in that one.[:'(]

Hilarious, but it wasn't until the end of the film that Kurt was correctly wearing his beret, i.e., in the opening scenes, it looked like a Jiffy Pop was on his head!

It might be worth it if they can actually get the state of the Japanese CVs correct at the time of the DB attack. Still amazes me the REALITY shown in Shattered Sword versus the FICTION in Fuchida's writing.

"Five minutes! Who would have believed that the tide of battle would shift in that brief interval of time? ... We had been caught flatfooted in the most vulnerable condition possible—decks loaded with planes armed and fueled for attack."

Barb -> RE: A new TMTSNBN? Or something better? Midway (5/25/2017 5:49:19 AM)

Yup, currently reading Shattered Sword. I would say a masterful analysis of space&time of events.

+1

The Nimitz, through computer error, strikes the US task force. [:D]

This is a fallacy, read Shattered Sword if you haven't already.

He was quoting Fuchida.

John 3rd -> RE: A new TMTSNBN? Or something better? Midway (5/26/2017 3:31:23 AM)

I almost said the same thing then recognized the quote. Well DONE!

RFalvo69 -> RE: A new TMTSNBN? Or something better? Midway (5/26/2017 7:23:17 AM)

Well he has four Japanese carriers to blow up. I guess that in the real battle the experience for the Japanese was not much different than the initial attack in Independence Day...

CaptBeefheart -> RE: A new TMTSNBN? Or something better? Midway (5/26/2017 7:54:29 AM)

Well, the original flick had Hellcats, angle-decked carriers and other monstrosities, plus a fictional social justice plotline, so let's hope this one's an improvement.

Hahaha, who am I kidding? Emmerich?

Cheers,
CC

A movie about Coral Sea could have a scene about a crossing the line ceremony, but why Midway?

Thats not a crossing the line ceremony. That is the scene when Captain Neptune and his Merry Band of Sea Urchins tells the US Navy High Command that the Japanese will attack Midway, as a preliminary target before the main attack on Kansas.

Captain Neptune is played by no other than. you guessed it... That veteran of "The Battle of Britain", "Pearl Harbor" and "Doolittle's Raid"... no other than B......
