butch4343 -> Airwolf Helicopter (5/25/2017 9:41:31 AM)

So last night am sitting infront of the TV and a re-run of the 80s Airwolf TV series was advertised, in case anyone doesn’t know it was a TV series where a super helicopter that was supersonic, had a load of sophisticated sensors and weaponary (for the time!) and it was contracted to a shady CIA-esque government agency to conduct covert operations.

It got me thinking it might be fun to try it out in CMNAO, my question is if I get the information and post it would the developers would add it to the DB, obviously as a hypothetical unit?

Obviously some of the performance specs are a best guess based on the show and Wikipedia entries, but we have more than a few hypothetical platforms in the database already.

Regards

Butch

Sorry Archangel it's Copyrighted. We'd have to pay CBS or whatever for the right. I'm sure if you look though you could find a A-109 in there that's close.

Anybody remember Blue Thunder? People would freak these days over a police helicopter armed like that.

Thanks for the response mike, I hadnt thought of the copyright angle.

I had thought of using the bell-222 but it doesnt do the Mach 2 part, 900nm range, have an AAR capability or the loadouts lol [:D]

Yeah I remember Blue Thunder as well, very cool!

MichaelJCuozzo -> RE: Airwolf Helicopter (5/29/2017 6:41:21 PM)

I would be all for a Blue Thunder helicopter model :)

Primarchx -> RE: Airwolf Helicopter (5/30/2017 1:54:18 AM)

God, I just felt sorry for that poor Gazelle with all that crap hanging off its' nose in Blue Thunder. The TV show had Dana Carvey (!) in it.

Dan109 -> RE: Airwolf Helicopter (5/30/2017 6:27:15 AM)

Per US Law:

https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ15a.pdf

"The duration of copyright in these works is generally computed the same way as for works created on or after January 1, 1978: life plus 70 years or 95 or 120 years, depending on the nature of authorship. However, all works in this category are guaranteed at least 25 years of statutory protection."

You'll have to wait a while for it...

Holy moly I didn't even realize he was in it until you said that. Totally missed that the years Dana Carvey was a big star.

I am pretty sure if you did not call the chopper "Airwolf" or "Blue Thunder" it would be OK. "For example, courts have found that “Superman” is copyrightable. However, the owners of the copyright cannot claim authorship on all superhuman characters.""A character infringement claim can succeed only if the plaintiff’s original conception developed the character sufficiently, and the defendants copied this development." To be safe, one could add or subtract a capability to or from the "superhuman" chopper and you would be "authoring" a new character. Additionally, it would be safer to not duplicate TV episodes as Command scenarios or place a picture from the TV show in the database. Another tidbit: "The creators of some video games use stock characters and scenery that resemble famous movie franchises. This alone likely doesn’t infringe the copyright of someone else’s work if the game’s character art and scenery are original creations developed by the game company."

Yeah or just pick out a similar aircraft already in the DB.

Thanks

Mike,

The problem is that there isnt really a helicopter in the Db that fits with some of the unique capabilities of the Airwolf, theres a Bell 222 in the database, however theres not one that is anything like the following:

Airwolf

2–3 (pilot(s) & weapons technician)
Passengers 2
Speed 345 mph (555 km/h) conventional, Mach 1+ with turbo thrusters
Range 950–1,450 mi (1,530–2,330 km)

Armament:

30 mm Cannon (×2)
.50 BMG Chain guns (×4)

M712 Copperhead shells (×6)
FIM-43 Redeye missiles (×12)
AGM-114 Hellfire missiles (×6)
AIM-4 Falcon missiles (x4)

Other Features

Sunburst anti-missile Flares (x24)
Chaff (radar countermeasure) anti-missile decoys (x24)
Bullet-proof armoured fuselage
Radar/Radio Jammer
IFR
90% Radar absorbent skin

While there's a little bit of SF and fantasy platforms in Command, most of it is realm-of-possibility stuff. Airwolf is not.

However that does not make my request for the Batboat any less valid... [;)]

Any wonder what the "Bat charge launcher" tech was, it destroyed torpedoes and brought the penguin sub to the surface for some mean hand to hand!

KLAB -> RE: Airwolf Helicopter (5/30/2017 8:19:13 PM)

From memory didn't Airwolf launch unfeasably small "Bullpup" missiles from three tubes that appeared from a sliding drop down launcher which would struggle to hold a 66mm LAW rocket?

kevinkins -> RE: Airwolf Helicopter (5/30/2017 9:57:46 PM)

I am not advocating adding fictional equipment to the database. I am forwarding the idea that if some platform from popular culture ever becomes interesting to designers it should not be discounted on strictly legal grounds. Personally, I do not see a reason this would become an issue today since most players are grounded in the “here and now”. Replicating the performance of a platform first described in a science fiction novel is not subject to copyright within the context of a computer game given obvious safeguards. Never think your IP is snookered. Usually a person will know when they are cheats. Most of the time they are not.
