Let's assume that we have 3 regiments of a division in a scenario which is based on 5 km hexes. How would you deploy these regiments? For example;

1)deploy two of them while positioning one regiment one hex behind in tactical reserve
2)deploy all of them in adjacent hexes or
3)deploy two regiments in adjacent hexes and reinforce these hexes with the two battalions of a divided 3rd regiment

What would be suitable for a good defense? Or does it all depends on the opponent and terrain?

The book says, "two up, one back, and feed them a hot".
But it really says what you said in your last sentence. METT Mission, enemy, troops, and terrain.

Keep in mind the penalty in dividing units (subunits have 80% of the parent unit proficiency, see Rule 8.2.11).

This one has always puzzled me. Do they suddenly become inept because mommy is no longer in the same counter? Did they lose their radios? Are their manuals left with the higher ups? Exactly why do they suddenly become less proficient? And by a whopping 20%!! Why are they suddenly imcompetent?

Rather than start another thread, one other question, now that everyone is playing III in preparation for IV!

I always keep HQ and Arty one hex behind the front line as recommended. However, if I just do a bombard it seems like a lot of mouse clicking for little effort - unless attacked unit gets disrupted by these bombardments?

Secondly, should same HQ and arty behind the line ever get a "tactical reserve" order? They are not active combatants, so not sure what if anything happens with this order. Line units I know might actively come to the defense.

Option 1 is the best:
1)deploy two of them while positioning one regiment one hex behind in tactical reserve

I will add that the three units must be "dig in" if possible. And that you will need to rotate the unit in and out of the front line. And, I usually put the artillery unit in tactical reserve if you want it to support your defense. But be careful, artillery must be protected otherwise this will end up with an artillery in the front line without protection...

Local reserve is useless in my opinion. You may find this article useful:

Artillery/HQ in tactical reserve will not make reserve movements, unlike other ground units. Put them in local reserve, though, and they will.

Ah I was not totally sure. Was it changed by patch during TOAW 3 or did I miss something?
For my information, I understand why I should put Artillery in tactical reserve but what is the benefit of putting an HQ in tactical reserve?

Thanks for the link. The rotation is especially useful in a WW1 scenario in my opinion. And HQ units may provide indirect fire in tactical reserve if they have extra artillery in them etc

Yes, the article has 12,000 words of advice! I'm guessing some of the "old" strategies may change with IV.

Obviously, naval will be covered in-depth. But I wonder if there is a way to highlight any subtle changes in IV in some type of change log. I admire WitE with it's 200+ page change log [:)]

Oh yeah but other than artillery, I do not see other benefits.

Well they also have AA and infantry squads in them most of the time. They may not move into the combat hex but they may still provide support nonetheless. Reviewing the combat logs would be give some insight I guess.
