Hello Lads,

Some of you may recall a similar post by me a few months ago... Well, plans have changed a bit but now my dad and I intend to visit the Normandy beaches in the last week of may. I'd like to ask you lot to give us some hints and tips - we'll be spending three days or so cruising the area, what are the good sites to visit? Also, I picked up a rumour about a King Tiger on display in a nearby French town, could someone point out which museum it's in?

a museum to the Normandy landings in the town of Bayeux.

I've taken a tour of normandy a year ago, the museum that you are searching for is in Saumur:

A lot of tanks in it (Tiger, Kingtiger, Panther, KV1, ...) but is far from Normandy.

In Normandy I liked very much Point du Hoc and de museum of the Atlantic wall .
The problem is that the Normandy is filled with many little museums everyone with few interesting things. There is not (IMHO) a big museum that must absolutely be seen.

(On my honeymoon...) I went to some of the military cemeteries (as one might guess, my wife was not too impressed) both the German (I think at La Cambe - Witmann is buried there as I learned 5 minutes ago :mad: ) and the US military cemetery at Colleville sur Mer - truly awesome displays of mankind's stupidity with the thousands of men buried six feet under.

Visit also the Point du Hoc where the US attacked a German artillery position on top of a steep cliff.

I went to Villers-Bocage but could not really put myself on the map. It was a quiet small town and I just had to guess where the action took place.

Use Google, and you'll find what you need!

I agree with Brutto-Bob. That's exactly what I would have said. If you go to Saumur, go into the back lot and check out all the tanks not yet restored. You can probably crawl on those, but not the working ones inside. I wore out my digital camera inside.

Also, stay in the bed & breakfasts. I stayed at a 500 year old farmhouse (like a mini-castle/fortress) just south of the German cemetary and it was wonderful.

There's a book my fiancee has with all the B&Bs in France listed. I can get you the name of it if you want.

The ppl in normandy (unlike the rest of france) are really friendly...just ask around and they will point you to some nice sites

Hello all,

Well, the plans for the tour are taking pretty definite form now. We'll leave Holland at the crack of dawn on wednesday 28th and make our way to Normandy, visiting Dunkerque and Dieppe on the way. I'm putting together a pack of material on all the sites we'll visit, namely Dunkerque, Dieppe, all the landing beaches, Pointe du Hoc, and hopefully Carentan, St. Mere Eglise and St Lô as well. Articles are easy enough to dig up but I'm having difficulty finding good maps.

If anyone has any recommendations - please let me know!

Make your way quickly to the American cemetery. There are several [SIZE=4]HUGE[/SIZE] wall maps there that show the whole plan and the offensives/counteroffensives of the invasion. The shop there probably has reproductions for sale.

I'll be sure to visit the cemetery, but I'd really like to have some good maps in advance. While I'm moderately familiar with the D-Day landings (played the scenarios a lot :P) my dad sure isn't... The internet seems to be well supplied with Omaha and Utah maps, but does anyone know where to find those for Gold, Juno and Sword? I've dug up a sketchy map of Dieppe but I'd sure like a better one, and maps of Dunkerque seem to be pretty rare.

Come on guys, there's detailed scenarios in SP:WAW for all these except Dunkerque (or is there?), you must have based them off some pretty good maps :)
