Stalintc -> [WAD] SSK Not Recharging Batteries - Build 936.15 (6/1/2017 9:13:59 PM)

Hi there,

I have just encountered a situation where a Snorkel capable SSK is not recharging batteries correctly. It states that batteries are being recharged in the UI, but the gauge for the amount of remaining battery goes down instead of the diesel gauge.

I will attach the save file in the next post in this thread hang on :-)

And here is the save file.

If you look at the Ulstein SSK to the North East, you will notice that this SSK is recharging just fine.

Update - This is partially my mistake and not at the same time.

If I drop the throttle to Creep or Cruise, the battery starts to charge correctly. The moment I put throttle to full or above it stops. This actually seems realistic since one engine would need to be used to charge the batteries.

However I don't think the UI should display (Recharging Batteries) when it is not. In fact come to think of it, why would battery go down anyway when running diesels through the snorkel?

Cheers

bump

Incase the problem is not clear from my inane rambling.

Expected Outcome:

When at snorkel depth and the snorkel is deployed, regardless of speed setting battery should not be used and diesel fuel should be depleted.

Actual Outcome:

When running at snorkel depth with either full or flank speed settings, battery is being depleted instead of diesel fuel. The UI correctly displays (Recharging batteries, but clearly this is not the case.

Thanks

Thanks added to the list.

Hi Stalintc

I think I know what´s going on. Most modern diesel/electric subs are electric driven and only use the diesels to recharge the batteries.
If you travel at full speed, the electric motors use more power than the diesels can generate, and therefore the battery charge decreases.

If you decrease the speed of the Kobben you will see that it indeed starts to charge the batteries.
Also. If you increase speed of the Ulstein, it will stop charging the batteries and start using them.

This is WAD, Søren nailed it:

If you travel at full speed, the electric motors use more power than the diesels can generate, and therefore the battery charge decreases.

Remember the submarines are Diesel-Electric, not Diesel/Electric.

Thanks to both of you for the information! Much appreciated!

Hi guys,
I'm rather ignorant about subs propulsion so sorry if the question is stupid :-)

In my current game I have a S 71 Galerna [Agosta, S-70] (Spain - 2006) running out of battery but cant surface because of enemy ship nearby.
What should I do to recharge the battery ? I'm currently creeping at 4kt at periscope depth but the battery doesn't seem to recharge. Cruise speed won't neither recharge. In fact I don't know how to activate the diesel engine and recharge the battery...

Thanks in advance

*EDIT didn't notice this thread was in tech support. Maybe not the appropriate location for my question ... sorry.

Hi nukkxx

You need to set the ASW doctrine "Dive when threat detected" to no.
Otherwise the sub will always dive when it detects an enemy unit.

nukkxx5058 -> RE: SSK Not Recharging Batteries - Build 936.15 (2/27/2018 5:06:15 PM)

Ah !! So it's in the side doctrine ! Didn't know that. Thank you !
But is it not dangerous to set it to 'no' ?

Schr75 -> RE: SSK Not Recharging Batteries - Build 936.15 (2/27/2018 5:21:06 PM)

Yes. That´s why it´s set to yes by default.[:)]

But lets not hijack this thread. If you have any questions, please post them in a separate thread.

Keep in mind that when you do that and allow it to snorkel to recharge the batteries, the snorkel mast is sticking up and can easily be detected, putting you in a world of hurt.

Have a look the new submarine tutorial by Apache85: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4436935
They are excellent and cover many of these topics in details. I learned some new things, like bottom masking and tactics for better recharge in diesel sub
