Just a quick question: is it possible to customize messages that appear in the log window? (e.g. "Event X has been fired")

you can turn off events showing up in the log in the log itself.

you can also turn off popups or even the messages displaying in game ---> game options ---> message log

Thank you, Cik, but that I already know. I don't mind seeing the messages I just wonder if they can be customized.

Messages are generally created by the scenario author. If you want to customize or edit them, use the editor and the "Edit Actions" function in the event editor. I suppose that you could do this while playing a scenario in the editor mode but cannot discern why this might be a good thing to do.

There a few ways you could do this

1)There is an action in the event editor called message. The creates a popup and it's written to the log.
2)There are a couple of lua ways to do this. Hvaen't tested but this function might: https://commandlua.github.io/beta/index.html#ScenEdit_MsgBox
