Fallschirmjager -> Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/4/2017 11:36:50 PM)

Recently I have really been wanting an age of sail game. Not necessarily a pirate game. But one where you can pick a nation. Maybe starting out as a midshipmen and then progressing from there and getting your own ship.
Capture prizes and be awarded money, the RPG aspect would be life back home and also growing your skills, crew, ship and political influence.

Does such a game exist?

That sounds a lot like Patrician II to me, a game that sometimes sells for as little as $5. Don't pay $20 for it. The negatives I remember were ship combat wasn't so great; some micromanagement; and heavily centered on buying and selling goods at different ports to make a profit. Unless you cheat.

I have Patrician II, III and IV and they are more trading games and city builders, they also take place in Hanseatic late Reinisance era.
And yes the combat was dreadful that that was not the point of the game, it was more about accumulating wealth by trading and helping your city.

How about East India trading company? Not a bad game, similar to what you are looking for.

pkpowers -> RE: Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/5/2017 2:46:01 AM)

there is also a game on steam called "Naval Action" ; you start low and can pick different countries and cruise the carribean looking for trouble[8D]

I have it and enjoy it but it's mostly multiplayer and there is no sense of context or larger goal. The game is early access and my progress has been wiped three times now.
I will revisit the game upon release.

I own this and all of the DLC and it was terribly bug ridden and IIRC did not work correctly on Windows 10 or I had serious issues getting it to work, I cannot remember which.

How about Naval Warfare Sims's "Rule the Waves." A well-received game, but not sure it meets your criteria that closely.

I have it and love it and it was my wargame of the year for 2015 but does not fit what I am looking for.

Wow! I want this game. [sm=innocent0001.gif] [:)]

Except I want some RPG aspects with the crew as well. And with the other ship commanders.

Rising-Sun -> RE: Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/5/2017 12:21:12 PM)

Wasn't too impress with Naval Actions, got it on Steam and been waiting for them to finish it. Limited what you can do there, just boating around.

Wish they had it setup so you can sail between Europe to New Worlds and collecting resources, meeting people, etc.

Asid -> RE: Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/5/2017 12:59:01 PM)

How about Winds of Trade?

here

Winds Of Trade is a strategy game about running an ocean trading company in the 18th and 19th centuries. Building your trading empire will not be your only goal! Ruthless pirates, shady smugglers, wartime and fierce competitors will make the way to the top a long and hard road for you!

Regards

About a year ago I was looking for age of sail games for PC, like Wooden Ships & Iron Men, etc. Absolutely nothing available that has come out in the last ten years or so. Really kind of amazing, I would think it would be a very popular genre...

That looks somewhat close to Patrician.

I am not looking so much for as trading simulation as I am a military career simulator where you are in one of the navies of the 18th and 19th centuries and have to RPG your way through a naval career.

Fallschirmjager -> RE: Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/5/2017 6:51:17 PM)

Really I just want a game that put the Aubrey Martin series of novels into game form.
Except you could do a career for any nation that was around at the time.

Asid -> RE: Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/5/2017 7:06:45 PM)

How about Salvo from Shrapnel.

It is an older title but might scratch the itch Salvo

Regards

If you want role playing, try Sid Meier's Pirates! game.

+1 - Salvo is fun and works on modern systems. I have the demo version.

If you're looking for Wooden Ships and Iron Men style game play - it's the best you can get atm (that works on Win2k8+).

Edit : Also if you have an iPAD - "Naval Tactics" is also very good.

Red2112 -> RE: Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/5/2017 8:42:00 PM)

Mobeer -> RE: Looking for an age of sail RPG (7/6/2017 9:36:20 PM)

East India Company was fun but repetitive and the difficulty shoots up part way through.

I really wanted Naval Action to be good but the comments from players suggest its a bit of a mess.

How about a couple of Android options:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.micabyte.android.pirates
Turn based RPG, I found it a bit slow and difficult.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.HomeNetGames.Pirates
More action orientated, depends a bit too much on adverts and hindered by some odd steering.
