ool -> Number of squadrons per airbase? (7/15/2017 11:01:57 AM)

Has anyone compiled a file of optimum number of Soviet squadrons per different types of airbases?

Would like to know I'm not over stacking airbases.

I think looking at the current supply/support/ammo/fuel in the airbase details is the best guide to whether you are overstacking - as they can vary so much most other things seem pretty minor in comparison. I think all Soviet airbases are the same type and the names are more for decoration - with the exception of VVS/Osnaz for supplying partisans missions and PVO restricted to interception missions. So there is no game mechanics reasons to differentiate an IAD base from a BAD base say. As I do not play Soviets a lot though you may want to get a Soviet expert to confirm this first though.

What Telemecus said above is correct. Normally I put 4 bombers on a single airbase and for fighters I put 6. I then put these on rail lines if at all possible.

As far as I am aware there is nothing in the rules that restrict PVO bases to Intercept missions.

I went back and checked and that is true. I also did a search and saw a number of threads on the subject - many of which you contributed to so you will know better than me. I saw one post where you did some testing and thought that PVO could do missions other than interception, but only manually not automatically. And perhaps also only as a staging base? http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4037533&mpage=1&key=PVO

Did you get any further on finding out for certain (beyond whatever the manual says) if PVO bases truly are interchangeable with others (exc not getting Guards status) or was there anything behind the repeated assertions about PVO bases? It would be a learning point for me.

In the manual it gives a definition of PVO and historically what they were used for ie Interceptors. I think this is the basis of the myth that they only fly interception.

However I have a game in progress and I will get back to you.

Dont really know if you can "over stack" airbases....as the more planes the more trucks and such they require I thought.....and Level bombers require even more support/trucks....Maybe Im wrong but I thought Airbases adjusted in size based on amount/type of aircraft there.

56ajax -> RE: Number of squadrons per airbase? (7/19/2017 3:25:16 AM)

One thing to check is the supply of ammunition to the base. On some I get 100%+ for supply and fuel and 50%+ for ammunition. Seems to be a bottleneck somewhere.

morvael -> RE: Number of squadrons per airbase? (7/19/2017 6:04:42 AM)

Maybe it's just Soviet ammo loss rule, possible in 1941 and 1942.

Earlier it was very easy to overload airbases. Now it's easier to hit the 9 air groups per base limit. Old load rules were too easy on fighters and too hard on everything else.

56ajax -> RE: Number of squadrons per airbase? (7/19/2017 6:23:33 AM)

Re PVO airbases.

If they are indirectly attached to a front Air command via their PVO Air Command HQ they will not fly unless the PVO airbase is selected as the staging airbase (and then only those units attached to the PVO Air Command HQ will fly).

PVOs start the game populated with fighters only. If you assign bombers they will bomb.

So the simplest thing to do is to disband the PVO Air Command HQs at your earliest convenience.

And if you let the AI determine who is to fly it seems to use the BAK airbases only.

They do adjust, but slowly, or not at all if far from supply. I also think there is an upper limit as, say, Axis bases never fully adjust to 9 heavy 40 strong bomber types in a base in my experience. If you are short of ammo or fuel the consequence is the planes do not fly - but more serious is support. If you do not have enough support damaged planes do not get repaired or are even destroyed. If you transfer in or assign a lot of aircraft (especially multi-engine types) to a base with no aircraft, or even a few single engine types, they will not have enough support for the logistics phase. As the details of each airbase do display their available support and update how much support is needed for the aircraft on the base it is easy to check whether they are "overstacked." For Axis if you change to heavier aircraft types slowly, and usually have 6 or fewer groups in a base you are usually OK. After that it is worth checking the airbase details. Soviet aircraft, and Axis allies, typically need far less support.

Re: johntoml56

Many thanks for getting back on the PVOs. I suppose there will be situations where you want airgroups to only do interception. So there is at least the option of keeping the HQs for that. I cannot tell you how long I have taken it for granted that PVO bases only intercept - or how often it is repeated in these forums. Learning point for me!
