TXTBOOK -> Ship Self Defense Behavior (8/3/2017 3:05:09 AM)

*Spoilers* I'm playing CoW Hail Mary *Spoilers*

The Chinese are launching DF-21D RV's at me, and my ships are launching RIM-174A-2's to intercept.

The problem is, the ships furthest away from the missiles are the ones launching the intercept, and the RIM's can't get to the DF's before they impact my ships.

In the attached, you can see USS Stockdale just launched a salvo of RIM's to intercept, but there's no chance of the intercept occuring prior to the Chinese missiles hitting my CSG. Ships in my CSG seem just as well equipped with RIM-174A's to fire, so why is this happening?

Probably worth it for you to change engagement rules for elements of your group or assign intercepts manually from ships you think are in the best position.

Yup, the ships actually getting attacked aren't launching because there are missiles already engaging those targets from the other gruup. Do what Primarch said!

I get that I can manually fire missiles, but shouldn't the default logic/AI launch defense missiles from the ship closest to the missiles? Or at least not fire using the furthest away ship?

This is a wild guess...

The ships further away might actually have a better at the RVs due to the reentry profile and the intercept profile. I say this only because I read an article some time ago about the SM-3 and its intercepts were optimized at distant x from the firing ship.

again, a wild guess. I didn't look at WRA, but to me, that is where the solution is. For ballistic missiles, I usually set the WRA so multiple units fire. There is just too much risk with those missiles.

Maybe?

I think the conceit is that the targeted side doesn't really know the intended target of the inbound ballistic attack. Therefore it engages with the first system to get a firing solution, even though that solution is intercepting well past the intended target's location. Then WRA kicks in and doesn't launch additional ABMs in line with more appropriate platforms because the inbound attack is already being engaged.

Perhaps a WRA that allows ABM self-defense fire if an inbound would arrive at a given unit's location before an already-launched interceptor would hit?
