Next up is a wonderful hymn claimed by the USN, the RN and many others besides.

Eternal Father - Rev John Dykes from Crimson Tide

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrAA5PuZpWM

and from the same film - another stirring mutha of a theme toon.

Main Theme - Hans Zimmer from Crimson Tide

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYe4dSunbs8

Capt. Ramsey: You do qualify your remarks. If someone asked me if we should bomb Japan, a simple "Yes." By all means sir, drop that f****, twice! I don't mean to suggest that you're indecisive, Mr Hunter. Not at all. Just, uh... complicated. 'course, that's the way the Navy wants you. Me, they wanted simple.

Go 'Bama!

Another good score. Several years back I ran with my son up a mountain, just to demonstrate how hard it really was. I had this score in my mind. I couldn't do it now without Bionics [;)]

The next great piece is the main title from Schindler's List. The best film ever made should have a memorable theme tune - even if that tune is so hauntingly sad and unbearably melancholy. The fact is that this piece of music is perfect for the film subject.

Theme music - John Williams from Schindler's List

The genius of Spielberg in full effect. I don't know if this was his idea or where it came from - but this was truly inspired EDIT: Apologies, these pictures should be the other way around of course

+1 (and then some more)

Gene Hackman is just perfect for the part of the sub captain. Following on from the part quote I added above, the scene goes on.

Capt. Ramsey: At the Naval War College it was metallurgy and nuclear reactors, not 19th-century philosophy.
[Stifled laugh]
Capt. Ramsey: "War is a continuation of politics by other means." Von Clausewitz.
Hunter: I think, sir, that what he was actually trying to say was a little more...
Capt. Ramsey: Complicated?
[Men Laughing]
Hunter: Yes the purpose of war is to serve a political end but the true nature of war is to serve itself.
Capt. Ramsey: [laughing] I'm very impressed. In other words, the sailor most likely to win the war is the one most willing to part company with the politicians and ignore everything except the destruction of the enemy. You'd agree with that.
Hunter: I'd agree that, um, that's what Clausewitz was trying to say.
Capt. Ramsey: But you wouldn't agree with it?
Hunter: No, sir, I do not. No, I just think that in the nuclear world the true enemy can't be destroyed.
Capt. Ramsey: [chuckling, tapping glass] Attention on deck. Von Clausewitz will now tell us exactly who the real enemy is.
[laughing]
Capt. Ramsey: Von?
[Men Laughing]
Hunter: In my humble opinion, in the nuclear world, the true enemy is war itself

This is a truly brilliant exchange (I love the 'von' [:)]) and the look that Ramsey shoots Hunter with after Hunter's last remark is just priceless.

Most of the time guns had tape over the ends of the barrels to improve aerodynamics and keep the barrels as clean as possible. When the guns were fired, the tape was blown open. Many times the ground crews would look to see if their plane was coming back with the tape blown open to indicate their pilot was in a fight.

The Americans used something akin to masking tape and it only covered the end up the barrel, so it isn't really very visible in pictures. Same thing with British cannons. But for the .303s the British put large squares of red tape over the entire area where the gun met the edge of the wing. In that picture you can see 8 red squares on the leading edges of the wings where the guns were. The Hurricane with 8X .303s had the guns together in blocks of 4 per wing and the tape usually looked continuous across the area where the guns were. The Spitfire had the guns distributed where ever they could squeeze them in.

That's why I love these threads. There is so much that one forgets - or never hears - that one is reacquainted with/introduced to. Personally I have picked up so much good music from these type of threads - including this next track that I would never have heard ordinarily because I would never watch the POS that it comes from.

For the Love of a Princess - James Horner from some POS movie that shall not be named

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk8323r577w

Sadly no picture from that POS can be found..oh dear, what a shame, never mind. So here are some Royal Scots Greys [&o]

In a similar vein, there is this absolute classic that needs to be treated appropriately and not remembered badly just because of the total toss that it will always be associated with

There you'll be - Diane Warren from a film so bad it makes Braveheart seem like an historically accurate masterpiece

Do you ever wonder if this war's going to catch up with us?

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled programme....

Next up its more WWII meets mid-70's electronica. This music is just incredible - like the film.

Untitled? - David Hentschel from Operation Daybreak

Orm -> RE: OT: War Film Scores (8/8/2017 8:07:19 PM)

When I watched We Were Soldiers I became hooked at once by the lament Sgt MacKenzie by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie that were used a couple of times in the movie.

Curiously enough I tend to get something in my eye when I listen to it. Especially the original version.

warspite1 -> RE: OT: War Film Scores (8/8/2017 8:14:50 PM)

And the first of the three to finish off my war film faves.

A recent addition its true (and normally wouldn't be added as I am a firm believer in the 'test of time' rule. But I haven't been able to stop playing this since the film came out so....

I love the throbbing aircraft and boat engine sounds, the clock ticking, I love the urgency and the drama, the steady, almost metronomic increase in intensity of the piece - as an accompaniment to that scene, this is just a work of art.

Supermarine - Hans Zimmer from Dunkirk

Macclan5 -> RE: OT: War Film Scores (8/8/2017 8:16:48 PM)

Not entirely certain this qualifies but...

Hadfields and McCoys - PBS (USA Public Broadcasting) mini series with Kevin Costner / Bill Paxton. circa 2012

For those only vaguely familiar - immediate post US Civil War period and an Epic struggle of two families.

The Music score won an award if I recall correctly.

The music has roots in early North American 'settler music' in turn influenced by reels, jigs, and popular music from the British Isles of its day.

Perhaps of limited appeal.

warspite1 -> RE: OT: War Film Scores (8/8/2017 8:29:01 PM)

The penultimate track is the second from Operation Daybreak.

The scene its from is tragic - sad does not even begin to cover it - and then the music starts and its bottom lip a quivering time.

Final scene(?) - David Hentschel from Operation Daybreak

warspite1 -> RE: OT: War Film Scores (8/8/2017 8:37:44 PM)

And finally - well there can only be one to finish off with can't there?

This piece of music was what the violin was invented for. There simply are no words to adequately describe this piece - no words that could possibly convey its sheer spell-binding beauty. When those strings are played to within an inch of their lives, its a truly religious experience. Incredible.

Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber from Platoon

I hope at least some of those tracks struck a chord with some of you - whether as a nice trip down memory lane or as a welcome new addition. And if not, well I enjoyed putting the tracks together anyway [:)]

I will!

pnzrgnral -> RE: OT: War Film Scores (8/10/2017 10:06:42 PM)

Many movies come to mind with either good or great scores, and several have already been noted here. Two of my favorites: Cross of Iron and Tobruk. In Tobruk's case (I first saw it as a teenager) I just couldn't get that theme music out of my skull for quite some time. And though not a film, but a TV series - Rat Patrol is my favorite.
