ikrananka -> V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 1:12:32 AM)

I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have the first patch for the old 1991/1992 V for Victory Utah Beach game by Atomic Games (PC version). This is the patch that takes the game from v1.1 up to v2.0 and was only available to registered owners of the game by mail.

I'm doing some experimenting with earlier versions of these games and need this patch. I have all of the other patches and updates, it's just this one patch I'm missing.

Thanks

Yes, I have Googled extensively, including the internet archive. The patch was only ever released on floppy disk by mail order years before the internet so I'm not surprised I can't find it online.

I have some 4 track and 8 track music tapes if you are interested... (only kidding)[:)] I do have those tapes though..

Great series of games!

Though once I played the World at War games I never went back to the V For Victory games.

Thanks for looking anyway - much appreciated. By the way, what version of Utah Beach do you have installed there? If you click on the small logo to the left of the File menu item, and then click on the About menu item it should tell you. My floppy disk version of Utah Beach installs v1.1 while my Commemorative Collection, which supposed installs v4.0.1 for all of the games, displays v3.0 for Utah Beach.

so yours are much later than my online ones

So, looks like your Utah Beach is the first unpatched version. Oh well - the search continues for the v2.0 patch.

What is interesting is that the second game to be released, Velikiye Luki didn't include patch 2.0 for Utah Beach on the disk despite this being the perfect opportunity to distribute it. For the third and fourth games they did include patches and updates on the disks BUT Utah Beach had to have already been patched to v2.0 before these patches would work.

zakblood -> RE: V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 5:42:27 PM)

zakblood -> RE: V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 6:10:36 PM)

Welcome to V for Victory 3.1!

This patch will automatically upgrade your Utah Beach 2.0, Velikiye Luki,
and Market Garden games to v. 3.1 of the V for Victory game system. Please
make certain that you read through the section entitled "V4V 3.1 Pre-Install
Information" before installing the patch.

patch read me included in zip attached to post

The 3.1 patch will not update V for Victory v. 1.1 or 1.2 (the original Utah
Beach). If you wish to play your Utah Beach scenarios under the same
directory as your other V for Victory gamesets, then you will need to
purchase the Utah Beach 2.0 Data Upgrade from Three-Sixty ($5.00 - US)

Thanks, but this is the same patch/update that I have on my Gold-Juno-Sword floppy disk. As you quote from the read.me file, to update Utah Beach from v1.1 to v2.0 requires a separate patch that you had to buy from Three-Sixty. How crazy was that? Why didn't they also include the v1.1 to v2.0 patch on the Gold-Juno-disk along with the other patches? There was sufficient space on the disk after all ! ! !

Oh well, the search continues.....

zakblood -> RE: V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 6:50:47 PM)

must admit that's the first time i've ever heard of a dos game costing to be upgraded as well, so was a surprise to me as well, and maybe why the patch is rare, as apart from the mac ones, i've not been able to find it, and that's not good either, as i tend to have a larger net to trawl than most searchers [:(]

asdicus -> RE: V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 7:38:01 PM)

I have kept this old Utah Beach v2 patch zip since 1995 ! The problem is it is a 1.1mb zip file which is too big to upload to the forum 750kb limit. I could email it if those interested give me their email details.

I still enjoy playing all the Atomic Games - they all work fine in dosbox.

ikrananka -> RE: V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 7:51:30 PM)

Agh - I keep trying to put links in my posts but cannot as I am a newbie here. Very frustrating! Anyway, I found this comment on the Google Groups archive of comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic.

"When I contacted Keith Z about putting the above patch on the Atomic server,
he seemed to indicate to me that the 2.0 files were not meant to be
distributed as they were (as it amounted to giving the game away), so I did
not put them into the file that is now on the Atomic server."

So, it would seem that the v2.0 patch was likely the full game and not a patch at all. Likely released before Atomic had written their patching software. So, no wonder it wasn't distributed widely.

asdicus -> RE: V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 7:56:09 PM)

I have checked my utah beach version and it shows as v3. I have a screendump but it is too large at 753kb to upload ! This forum upload limit is tiny and not helpful at all.

Anyone if anyone wants the patch send me your email details. Or I could just send you all 4 v4v atomic games patched to v3. That is a 10.3mb download again I could email it.

No problem, I found a download for it and tried it out. Unfortunately (for me), it installs v3.1 of the V4V engine and v3.0 of Utah Beach which is, I believe, exactly the same as that from the later Commemorative Collection that I already have. So, I'm still missing Utah Beach v2.0.

ikrananka -> RE: V For Victory Utah Beach Patch (8/12/2017 8:43:09 PM)

Apparently the full Utah Beach v2.0 game was available from a Finnish university's website back in 1995 (source: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic). Understandably this is long gone and the relevant pages are not on the internet archive - aggghhhh!!!!
