snej77 -> BIG Problem with Campaign! PLEASE Help! (5/26/2001 1:35:00 AM)

Hi, I have been playing Steel Panthers for ages now, just recently found out about SPWaW - so I started a long WWII Campaing with version 5.0 - but everything the AI buys is INFANTRY, INFANTRY, INFANTRY - sometimes there are a couple of AA or AT Guns, but almost never tanks - I adjusted the points to 2600 for each side, but still almost no tanks - Oh, I am playing the Germans, and it doesn´t matter if fighting the Polish in 39, the British in 41 or the Russians in 44 - (almost) NEVER enemy tanks encountered!!! What can I do?? Pleas help - this game is just no fun without enemy tanks!

May want to upgrade to 5.1. There was some OOB tweaks.

There's always the 'universal' fix....perhaps it will help. Simply enough, exit SPWAW and enter Windows Explorer. Find the steel.prf file in SPWAW and delete it. Reenter SPWAW and set your preferences, then see what the AI does. After trying that, you might want to look your preference section over carefully, I don't recall the game defaults, but it seems like there is a toggle for tank force composition, so that it may be possible to have the AI pick almost nothing but infantry or armor. No - no toggle, but the AI is now set to purchase more infantry typically. Its random so sometimes you may get a run where you get very few tanks. AS usually you try to address the "Every tank in teh polish inventory is always in my battle" problem and you get a lot of battles with just infantry.

I THINK I upgraded to 5.1 - No, I am not THAT stupid not to know how to upgrade - I used the upgrade 5.0 to 5.1 and everything seemed ok - but the game still shows 5.0 (do I have 5.1 now or not?) The infantry problem still exists! So should I really delete this .prf file?

Paul Vebber -> (5/26/2001 5:48:00 AM)

WHat may have happened is that the upgarde got nested in your main directory - this will occur if you use the Browse button to set the directory - for some reason we can;t figure out, the defalut in the install program is the folder CONTAINING the target folder, not hte target folder itself... THis still doesn't change the fact that you get a lot more infantry in the long campaign now.

snej77: Since one greater in the ways of SPWAW has seen this thread now, I doubt deleting the steel file will work, but it cannot hurt. As I understand it, the preferences toggle creates a new steel file if there isn't one there already. I've done it a number of times. Even if it did destroy your game in some manner, you could always restore it through the recycle bin options after right-clicking. Oh, maybe a major difference. You want to know of the AI is picking all infantry, speaking in terms of your problem disappearing? Try surredering after the first turn and look at the AI's forces; quick and easy. The infantry seems to be a good deal more forward en masse than before so that it may seem that's all there is. Just a suggestion, but Paul is probably right. snej77: The main reason the AI is choosing so much infantry against you is that you are stacking the OOB odds against it. You should NEVER choose the number of battle points for the AI in a campaign. Always set the AI battle points to the default XXX. Also by playing on HARD difficulty and with True Troop Cost ON and Rarity ON and AI Advantage ON you give the computer many more points to spend so it can then purchase more AFVs, artillery, etc. This is what I do when I play a campaign and I have no complaints about the AI force mix when playing against it under these conditions.

Just a comment on the "too many infantry" problem. Maybe keep in mind that there really weren't high proportions of armour in WW2 in a relative sense. The German Sixth Army going into Stalingrad had maybe 1000 AFVs, with 250,000 men. The most popular German Tank, the PZR MkIV, only reached a total war output of c9000 units of all variants. It may in fact be more realistic to have a crap load of inf with a sprinkling of AFVs. Having said that, I'm with you, there's nothing better than seeing 60 or 70 panzers trucking across the field to meet my masses of T34s, it is called Steel PANTHERs after all!!

Tanks are easy to kill. There is only 5 in a platoon. But infantry thats another problem. With all that infantry it is a more interesting game. The Pole's usually start with a Amour assualt using all the armour they have followed by about three waves of infantry, gee just like WWI or was that early WWII. :D

FrankyVas -> (6/5/2001 6:36:00 AM)

You can also change the scenario yerself. Copy the three save games files from your saves directory into the scen directory. Rename the files scen###.??? (### = an empty number, ??? = keep the extension). Then you go into the editor and change what you want. When you are done, reverse the procedure. Now the AI has what ever you bought for it. It's more fun if you have some one else do it for you. Frank V.
