Yes, Americans have a bad habit of trying to interject democracy into other societies as the cure all for all of their ills. We fail to understand that the first priority of any society is stability. Without that, nothing else can happen-especially democracy.

True. Democracy is alien to many cultures around the world (unlike the world's oldest profession).

In many of the current hot-spots, the culture was formed in a harsh environment where the customs had to be rigidly enforced to ensure survival (lack of food, lack of water, little opportunity to travel). People are most comfortable in the culture they grew up in, so when a change threatens that culture, they feel under attack and will fight back, even when the change offers things we value like more freedom for women, travel, choice of religion or political leadership.

The only way I see this eroding is gradually introducing changes in ways that involve the local populace in the process. Education is the big one - let children see a glimpse of the rest of he world and they will want to see it for real when they are able to.
Above all, avoid invading and imposing changes.

I remember reading a position paper, showing that civilization has a 3 day life cycle. Seeing a mention of freedom & food brought it to mind. Watching disasters like Houston, and New Orleans, demonstrated it. Pretty thought provoking...

I have also seen where some folks like the comfort of no choices in life. Seems it adds the abiliy to blame someone else when things go wrong. We have all heard some folks say it's not my fault but someone elses fault or the systems fault when I fail. Some folks like fighting the man even if he's invented or not what they think he is. We have at times gladly accepted chains in exchange for the basics of life even when those forging the chains caused the shortages

You guys laugh, but if you want to learn the real situation in a country, prozzies and cabbies are among the best people to talk to, or so I've heard. You won't learn much unvarnished truth from government officials or high-level businessmen.

Cheers,
CC

Probably meant to say "Gutter", meaning the downtrodden and forgotten of a society (even if they were authors of much of their misfortune).

I thought of that, but since men so infrequently converse with their tailors (because we only wear suits to funerals these days), I decided you must mean the "seedy" side of life - like some streets in Hamburg ... or so I have heard/read.

Oops - "sewer" = "seamstress"

That makes sense.

Of course, a "sewer" is also the system of pipes that carries human waste - *ack*.

Or, a sue-er could be a lawyer.

With that in mind, old joke: Do you know why California has the most lawyers in the country and why New Jersey has the most toxic waste dumps?

New Jersey got first choice.

I heard it as New York and New Jersey.

You'd think the California lawyers would be heading to to New Jersey like stink on *waste* so they could sue the crap outta the government for dumping all that waste on the good citizens of Joy-ze...

Hmmm - makes me wonder - with all of that toxic waste, if you tossed in a buncha California Lawyers they might-could join to cause nuclear fusion, which would probably make New Jersey a brighter place to live...

Why don't lawyers get eaten by sharks?

Professional courtesy.
