I played a lot of SC2 Assault on Democracy and I found that action in the Pacific Theater had good and bad points. There were nice cat-and-mouse-and cat battles involving carriers. But in my experience, there was never much of an imperative for the Allies to do any kind of "island-hopping" campaign, probably because of the map scale. As long as the Allies held on to New Guinea, Australia, and Hawaii there was little point in fighting for any of the other islands. Having hexes that cover fewer klicks would change that, in a good way, but I think the rules would need to be tinkered with to reflect the paramount importance of spotting and recon in the Pacific Maybe add a Coastal Watch DE that would allow occupied islands extended spotting ranges. Maybe add a few naval air recon units--little or no attack capability, but an expanded spotting radius. That would help make islands worth fighting for.
