larryfulkerson -> RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/17/2017 2:51:41 AM)

GP wants to start a PBEM of a RHS scenario he's calling 129 with him as the Allies and me as the Japs. As you may
already know GP is above my skill class currently so I'm using this post as a "request for comments" for the things
I need to know and watch for playing GP and or what might be the best advice you can give a nearly new guy about the
game.

Yaab -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/17/2017 1:38:15 PM)

You guys just play the game. RHS II still needs testing and input from human players.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 6:50:15 AM)

The RHS mod is quite a change from stock which is my experience lately. For one thing there's quite a few new ship
repair yards. I've done a cut and paste, and cut it down so it would fit here, of the ship yards and their sizes
and there's quite a few of them in all the right places. I still think I need one at Kwajaliene.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 6:57:41 AM)

I've found a manpower center which is right now 0(0) and I tried to boost it to one and there
was an error message that no changes were allowed or something like that so I'm wondering
what the point was of putting a manpower center there with no production and no changes.

I found another one. Maybe I should start a list of them.

Email Sid for answers. It is his mod.

I've noticed that most of the Japanese training squadrons start the game
with remarkably low morale. I'm standing down those bad boys until they
reach at least 60%. I have no idea what caused the low morale but I'm
hoping it will improve quickly. I'm still going through the first turn
set up procedure and have spent a whole day yesterday on it and it looks
like I may have everything done after another full day today.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 8:57:02 PM)

I found out that you can use the city screen to find those garrisons that have an excess of
garrison and therefore troops that can move to other needed places. I'm going to see if I
can't heat up the China theater a bit and get something going. RHS II has a lot more RES
centers in China and I need most of them. The economy has been revamped and it's more
important than ever to get the resources flowing to the home islands from the get go. On
the other hand the facilities in the home islands have been taylored and tuned for
production values. The RES centers usually have a small LI facility there in the same
hex. That's pretty cool actually.

I've turned on the auto-convoy system to full-blast by turning on all the cities I can
reach by boat. I'm obligated therefore to stuff Osaka with all the AK's it can hold to
service all the routes. I'm hoping to get the auto-convoy system to do most of the
logistical work. The problem with the auto-convoy system is that sometimes it routes
TF's past enemy installations and other dangerous situations.

I've been told that RHS II has what are called "ghost subs" that will draw fire and when
hit they disappear instead of sink. Like a ghost radar return almost. I'm going to try
it out near Pearl. I've already deployed the midget subs at Pearl but I'm expecting
most of them to founder on the protective nets around the harbor.

I'm putting the finishing touches on the training squadrons by deciding which of them can
be switched to combat instead of training. It's going to take a while because there's
a lot of training going on. Two thirds of the squadrons are in training right now.

I found this write-up about ghost submarines in the RHS II house rules document.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 9:22:29 PM)

The RHS II download package comes with an extensive set of documents for you to peruse.
The documents explain the SOP that applies to just about everything. I've spent a lot
of time perusing those documents and they contain valuable advice and it's well worth
the time spent in them.

A lot of you guys might want to download the RHS II package just for the documentation.

RHS II has seasonal art for the game. Here's how and when to change the files for the seasonal art.

Wouldn't you be demoralised flying Willow or Potez?

Tho I have to admit that I consider flying biplanes beneath me, they were
probably the best aircraft the Japs had available for relative new guys.
I can see using the Willow on primary flight training but I'm thinking
that for advanced training a Claude might be better. Either that or
a Nate. There was one squadron flying the Soviet I-16 but I disbanded
it real quick. I'm not building any of those and there's only a few left.

I'm thinking that RHS II has a lot more training squadrons than stock. I'm
seeing about two thirds of all the squadrons in training now and it's still
the first turn. I haven't struck Pearl yet. Which reminds me. Should
I go for Manila instead of Pearl? Brian did that in one of our games
and sank a lot of my operational subs.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 9:59:55 PM)

Some of the old stock locations have new names. Babeldoab is now Karor or some $hit. I'm going to have to learn a
lot of new names for locations. I think they are the name of the place during that time period instead of just having
any label on a base. I really appreciate the hard work that went into learning the "real" name of places on the map.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 10:11:20 PM)

And there are separate *.dat files for the seasonal art panels. It's coordinated.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 10:49:38 PM)

I was going through all the "factory set" TF's and lots of them have troops onboard and are headed for their
targets already as per normal but the Jaluit based TF 15 didn't have it's troops loaded yet. I'm loading them
now. They are targeted at Makin. I need to get there before he does to avoid a fight. Although he may already
have some people there. I need to take a look at that. That means I'll need a recon asset down here.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/9746FCFC3A8C40F5BB14E2E1A2CD5418.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 10:56:09 PM)

I moved a recon asset from Kwajalien to Jaluit and it takes all the fuel the little bugger has just to get there
but after 5 minutes taking pictures he's done his job and can leave. I don't know why I bothered to get some
recon asset down there because the Jap troops will probably have landed there before I get any operational intel.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 11:42:37 PM)

I just now found out that Amami Oshima has an LI industry larger than the RES center there. That probably
means that I'm going to have to ship in some RES periodicly just to keep the LI going. And this base isn't
the only one I'll bet. There's probably a dozen places like this that will need a suplemental RES run.

EDIT: The suplamental RES doesn't HAVE to come from Tokyo, better would be Kagoshima, it's closer.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/A345091AC3B44FA6AE09325C614BF5FA.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/19/2017 11:55:45 PM)

I started looking through the industry list highlighting just LI and RES and found those pairs of bases where
the RES is smaller than the LI and therefore will need some extra RES periodically and I was expecting maybe a
dozen such places but I've found 5 of them before I've exhausted the letter C. There's a bunch of them then.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 12:24:26 AM)

Shanghi has an oil refinery but no oil well. That could be a problem if I don't have enough oil flowing to
Shanghi. I was hoping to get some oil from Shanghi for the home islands but it's looking better as a RES
source now. I'll have to monitor the oil level because I may have to shut the refinery off in the near future.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 12:31:27 AM)

I've got two refineries that don't have enough oil to run and one of them is at Amoy. I haven't looked up where the
other one is but I'm shutting off the production for those two refineries until they have enough oil to run.

EDIT: I see where I'm spending more than 24K on engines alone and I'm wondering how many engines I can turn off to
save the HI.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 12:47:19 AM)

Something new to me is the "Munitions plant" found under the Armaments tab. They turn out guns and I've got a lot of
them. Most of them are nickle and dimed over the map but there's a couple of big ones, near Tokyo and Yokohoma. I'll
have to watch the numbers at first before I've determined whether or not I have enough. Vehicles too. Vehicles tends
to change remarkably at first as I recall.

ny59giants -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 12:50:48 AM)

This was the first mod I tried against GP. My issue with it was the huge amount of HI Japan was able to generate per turn. It was supplies and fuel that limits Japan. Has that changed?

I don't think I could play this mod without Tracker. Are you using it?

I'll let GP explain what he is doing differently against you then me. [:D] Probably not getting so many warships sunk!

Beware of his subs around the Home Islands and your major ports. That is the only success he has had.

I'm still in the throes of doing my first turn set up kinds of things, our game hasn't actally started
yet, I haven't launched my Pearl Strike, etc. so it's kinda early for me to make a judgement on the
scenario yet, or the game yet, or the economy yet. I suspect there will be a lot of things I'll have
to change in T2 in order for the change from "Pearl Strike" mode into conventional wartime mode.
And I expect Vehicles to drop precipitously in T2 due to units being fielded.

quote:

ORIGINAL: ny59giants

I tested that the first thing I did after making #4 my work in progress file. It loaded just fine
and I'm using it extensively. The one nit I have to pick with the designer is that there's no way
to see the skill levels of the various pilots. I have no idea when to change the training squadrons
to a different skill other than going to the squadron and looking at the pilots skill levels manually.
For each different squadron and there's close to 300 of them now. A little less than 2K pilots, maybe.
So I've adopted a "date" to change which changes depending on the skill level of the class generally
and how fast they are advancing in the skill they are learning. At 70% I change the skill to something
else and train them some more. Unless there's a shortage of, say, fighter pilots and then I cull the
training squadrons to make up the need.

He hasn't explained what he's going to do, although he has told me he's making a plan. That sounds
ominous. I expect him to ambush my Makin invasion TF because he has two times out of the last three
games we've played. This last time, the third game we played he went for Manila and it's ports
instead of Pearl as he was the Japs. That game didn't last long as Brian felt it a burden and I agreed
with him. He's an expert at Allied stuff. I get a better game when he's Allies.

quote:

Thanks for the heads up. I'm planning on escorting everything I can and I'm looking for low-price
AKL's to run up and down the entrance to Tokyo, back and forth, so he can waste his torpedoes on
some of my smaller ships. That's the theory. Plus I'm planning on having some ASW assets out there
plying the waters back and forth on patrol. And lots of spotter planes. ASW patrols for them. I'm
determined to give Brian a better game this time.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 1:36:46 AM)

I was thinking of sending my moves sometime in the early morning hours,
because he usually get's up about 04:00 my time so I usually try to get
it there by 03:00 if I can.....so he'll have something in his inbox when
he gets his coffee and his eyes open a little wider and he has something
to do. I'm not in a hurry but I do like to stick to a routine if I can.
For his part Brian tries to get his moves to me before about 15:00 his
time so that would be about 18:00 my time so I can work on my moves
overnight and do a more in-depth, detailed job of it. That's the way we've
gotten into the habit of and it's working remarkably well.

But he sent me an email saying he's not quite ready and that I shouldn't
sell myself short. In other words, those things I was going to put off
until T2, go ahead and do those things now. Okie dokie.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 1:41:35 AM)

I think I've found something wrong with Bangkok. I show over 60 AV parked there but the mouseover blurb says
there's only a partial garrison. Is it not counting the units there correctly or something?

[image]local://upfiles/16287/153EE73595AB4E12B8C1698207981276.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 1:52:52 AM)

This is my first good look at this mod and as I'm building TF's for the first turn I'm running into these
short-range little thimble-full at a time xAKL's, hundreds of them. I'm used to the behemoth ships that
can carry 10 times what these guys carry. I'm guessing this is to better reflect the shipping available at
the time? Or to make the game more realistic? I'm not sure what to do with these guys. They aren't much
good for anything. I'll use them for between the islands trips etc.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/721B7D6E065B4111A430E9CF22D32CB2.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 2:03:54 AM)

Here's another little nit to pick. I went through the ships in the hex and counted 13 float planes (1 is down for
maint. ) so I know there's 13 there but when I click on the float planes label in the first display I'm presented
with a squadron of 7 without a way to see any more squadrons. The other 6 planes. D'oh.

larryfulkerson -> RE: RHS II scen 129 GP and me (9/20/2017 2:11:23 AM)

Of all the troops at Cam Ranh Bay that have to be moved I've segregated them into at least three trips. One is
for a unit that got separated from it's plarents somehow and needs a trip over to the PI. Then there's a group
or two that need to go south to Brunei and Miri and there's a large group that need to go to Malaya and I don't
have shipping for all of that at the same time I don't think. Also, there's more troops that are assigned at
Cam Ranh Bay that I may get around to moving somewhere.

EDIT: I got another look at the picture and I note that a lot of those units are in the red supply-wise so I'd
rather give them a day to gather up their supplies before I actually load them. What's the advantage of doing
that? I don't know. It just sounds like what the ground commander would command of his underlings. Either
him or the Task Force Commander whoever that is. I need to check on that.
