crsutton -> OT-Just when I thought it was safe to go into the water (9/26/2017 2:10:56 PM)

I thought that mines and great white sharks were about the only thing I had to worry about at Cape Hatteras. Now this...

I thought you were a realtor.

When you chose your vacation home didn’t you check out the fact that the North Carolina outer banks
Has sharks, mines, rattlesnakes, dangerous rip currents, strong winds, hurricanes and is called
The “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for a good reason.

Pirates used to roam those waters before they moved to Raleigh and joined our state government.

We lost an entire colony out there so keep your eyes on your family at all times.
Especially any small children.

From the markings, I'm going to say that was an Eastern Diamondback, not a Canebrake/Timber rattler.

Believe me, it was impulse buying at it's worst. I should have know better...[;)] But of course, if you have ever been to Cape Hatteras then you would understand. It is one of the finest places on earth.

Those pictures (from Jonathan Wiles) appear to be a different snake than the one in the video. I'd say the one in the video is most likely a very large timber rattlesnake. Can't be sure about the still shots posted here though.

Nice doggy.

It is a fake. They don't get that big. Big, but not that big.

Yes, two different snakes. Apparently, rattlesnakes go into the surf. I would have never thought....Eastern Diamondback were native to southern NC but some scientists and conservationists believe they may even be extirpated in North Carolina. I have never heard of one on the Outer Banks. Problem is, people see one, or a Cottonmouth and they just think they have to kill it. Pretty stupid really.

What are they hunting in the water? [&:] Or is there some other reason?

geofflambert -> RE: OT-Just when I thought it was safe to go into the water (9/26/2017 8:05:50 PM)

Ambush water birds maybe.

Any fisherman that has a buddy take a picture of his 'monster catch' understands the principles of forced perspective and parallax in photography. [;)]

geofflambert -> RE: OT-Just when I thought it was safe to go into the water (9/27/2017 1:36:24 AM)

gorns don't understand parallaxes or stuff like that. Do you realize "parallax" has three syllables? Anyways parallax sounds like Gomer and his brother Goober.

AcePylut -> RE: OT-Just when I thought it was safe to go into the water (9/27/2017 2:19:47 AM)

It's a perspective difference. They hold the snake much closer to the camera from where they are standing. Makes the snake look 10x a big.
