In TOAW III full combat reports are visible only for attacks you make in your turn. In PBEM replays you can't watch reports from your defense.
Also the replay player has no "one step back" button or "go to the next fight". Does TOAW IV has any upgrades on that fields?

This a good question. An answer would be useful.[;)]

Sorry for the long delay in getting an answer to you fellows,
I've been busy. But I'm taking a break to look around the site
and see what I can do to help out. You've played TOAW III
and liked it.....you NEED TOAW IV for the battle report
dialog. Any battle by either side is recorded so that it can
be called up anytime during that turn to see what the losses
were and what your opponent's make-up is in detail and it's
indespensable now that we have that tool. I don't know what
we did without it for so long. It's revolutionized gameplay.
More info at your fingertips. It's a different game guys.

So Larry's answer is "no".

I dont care for battle reports. Replay is the only way to go.

The playback controls are modeled after the VCR controls in that you
can indeed go backwards a step or skip ahead and of course "play"
but there's a pause button in case you need to write something down
and so on.

But what the battle report dialog does is keeps track
of each battle so that at any time during the turn after the battle
has happened, you can view the results of that battle and the
details of attacker and defender equipment etc. I think it's a
great addition to the game and I can't imagine playing without it
now. You need a picture of it to explain what I mean and I don't
have permission to post one yet. Sorry about that. Watch this space.

I'm about 95% sure that the old VCR playback is still there for PBEM++.

In addition, you can also view on the map exactly where the battles occurred and pull up the full expanded battle reports for each combat which I find more useful than the VCR replays.

Thinking about it, it should be possible to allow animating that display so that you could see the battles like the VCR does, highlighting each one, although the movements aren't recorded. I'll have to think about that for later. That would let you zoom, examine the current state of the units, etc. I might even be able to hook the battle reports into the VCR.
