Hoplosternum -> How many research factories should I run? And other r&d questions (11/4/2017 4:41:39 AM)

I have been looking through some of the AARs and older research threads for ideas on Japanese aircraft r&d as I have been thinking of taking up Witpae again. I appreciate exactly what JFBs research might be secret so I just want to ask general questions so I don’t make any really basic errors. Hopefully some of you can share your thoughts and help me [:)] I have played Japan before (but have more allied experience) but only under quite heavy house rules which hugely restricted the amount of research so I have never really had to plan a full r&d strategy. So assuming scenario 1 (or a similar mod) and pdu on here are my (many) questions. Roughly how many (size 30) research factories do people aim to build? And I assume I still want size 30 factories and 500+ engines in the pool? Do you try and build them all from December ‘41, or do you build some then and start the rest after the SRA is secured and you have some idea of the shape you are in? Is there anything to really consider beyond my available supply in research? Do people mostly just concentrate r&d on fighters? Is there anything that isn’t a F / NF / FB that it really helps to get early? If your escorts (or luck / weather) does not get your bombers through is there any bomber design that will survive allied CAP and AA? Are their any typical house rules I should look out for that cause you to change your r&d strategies? Do any of the commonly used mods change your r&d strategies much and what should I look out for here? At least in scenario 1 is it all really just Franks and Zeros (and maybe Sams) and I should just build as many of those r&d factories as I can afford. Is it typically considered gamey to leap frog intermediate designs? Or is that just routinely done these days? Cheers
