Hi everybody,

With the "The Operational Art of War IV" release, we have prepared three useful tutorials!

Check them out here:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLk5K-IfEIqTtb2XCumq4JyFFifnDA6Rr-

jnpoint -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/16/2017 6:54:35 PM)

Just watched the videos. It might just be me, but wow 'Time management' is hard to understand. I guess I have to play the game to understand it.

morphin -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/16/2017 7:31:50 PM)

Yes, it would be very helpful if you could draw the current cursor positions more clearly and visibile. That helps follow the instructions

Andy

LarryP -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/16/2017 9:07:57 PM)

Thank you sir! I have been watching them while having to lay down from a medical procedure gone wrong. YouTube on the TV. [&o]

Phoenix100 -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/18/2017 8:07:38 PM)

+1 on the cursor. The tutorials are very hampered by the fact that, certainly in 2 and 3, the cursor vanishes, so you can't work out what the narrator is talking about. They need re-doing with that bug sorted out.

I thought it was just me. [:)] Agreed.

eltornado -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 1:56:59 AM)

I thought it was just you two but, its me too [;)].

+1 for highlighting the cursor so we can follow along.

JiminyJickers -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 6:59:20 AM)

Yeah, most recording software has option to show the mouse cursor. Obviously they didn’t choose the option. It make the videos very confusing, hopefully they can record them again, but I’ll be very surprised if they do that.

bazjak -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 7:54:19 AM)

I to am at a lose regarding the You Tube vids without a curser
Very confusing im looking all over the place for it and becouse of that i dont get what im ment to be doing
Im on hold at the mo as im finding it very difficult to get to grips with
Also in th Tutorial tutorial (lol) it says that when you move the curser over certain things it changes shape so that it lets you know about things but mine dosnt
Bit disappointed at the mo i must say

sPzAbt653 -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 2:14:56 PM)

I did some tutorials for TOAW III. I did not redo them for TOAW IV because most everything in them still applies. In other words, the new graphics are not needed for a tutorial, and the main game changes such as Battlefield Time Stamps and Naval Rules have their own separate detailed threads on this forum. Therefore, while Matrix would understandably like new players to watch their new tutorials, you may find that the tutorials on the page below may be helpful, as they were created by a long time player of TOAW.

Note: The people at Matrix are doing the best that they can with a difficult situation. These days we the public don't have the patience to read manuals and learn stuff from one game to the next, and we expect everything to be easy and intuitional.

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 3:54:25 PM)

Alternatively, and when I got the time, I will try to produce some slides (see example below). I prefer slides; not that I got an annoying voice and resent videos, but well... I am old school and still work with flipcharts rather than .PPT for presentations and training/teaching purposes.

Phoenix100 -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 4:23:39 PM)

I really liked your slides, Oberst Klink - thanks for posting them all. Would be nice to have them updated to 4.

Thanks sPzAbt653, I'll check out those videos too.

bazjak -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 4:23:50 PM)

Thank you both sPzAbt653 and Oberst_Klink for your replys
Must admit i like the thought of the slides

jzardos -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 4:44:01 PM)

The slides are nice. I very much liked the tutorial videos and I'm hoping there will be more. Much of this game I'm still trying to understand.

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 4:46:13 PM)

OK, here they are; in general they still apply (to some extend) to TOAW IV; just disregard the old TOAW III interface.

Klink, Oberst

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 5:00:40 PM)

And here the scenario. NOTE: The folder goes into the graphics override, the .BMP and .SCE into the scenario/tutorial folder.

Have fun peeps and feedback appreciated!

Klink, Oberst

And don't forget that making videos is a pain in the butt and stressful.

I also like Klink's slides, they are fun and easy on the eyes.

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/19/2017 5:44:03 PM)

I liked your TOAW III vids... you got a balanced and neutral voice, like an uncle or a narrator... in fact, I'd say you kinda like Liev Schreiber of TOAW III vids :)

Naturally, as you know, I COULD do vids or audio files with my Brit accent... or with my Arnie impersonation :D

Klink, Oberst

Very good videos and your comments on player laziness is spot on.

lol, I could do them in my killer Elmer Fudd voice.

Thanks Moltke !

Whatever voice you use, don't use mine.[:D]

Daniele -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/20/2017 9:45:05 AM)

Hi all,

Apologize for the missing cursor on the videos. Apparently, the machine we used to record all the videos wasn't set up properly (well, I did not set it up properly) and we discovered the issue only when everything was already online and available to the public. I know it could sound a poor excuse and I understand your frustration.

We are considering all the options, including to re-do the videos from the beginning.

Again, apologize for this issue.

Regards,

Please do
Thanks

Der Zeitgeist -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/20/2017 1:49:35 PM)

If you do any new videos, I would love to have one on the details of the concepts of supply, readiness and proficiency and the associated standard and advanced rules.

As far as I see from the manual preview, TOAW IV still seems to have a large number of settings for "old" and "new" rules, and back in TOAW III, for me as a new player, it was extremely difficult to understand these concepts and different rule sets and which ones were supposed to be switched on or off for different scenarios.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/20/2017 2:26:01 PM)

Really don't use Standard Rules, unless you are very new to wargaming and need something simpler. No scenarios that I know of were designed using Standard Rules [ever], and while playing with them is fine, things are sure to not go as the designer intended.

As to the Rule Sets, check Scenario Briefings which sometimes include recommendations, and check the What's New documents in the Manuals Folder for possible descriptions of newer features/settings.

I have made videos for TOAW, and if it is going to be a discussion, or lecture, or description that doesn't require screen shots or graphics, then a video isn't really needed or useful as minds wander when voices are droning and there is no action.

And, if you are tired of looking for something, just ask here !

Appreciate your response and candor regarding the missing mouse pointer in the tutorial videos. I watched all three videos in their entirety and would appreciate being able see the mouse pointer.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

I'm still a bit on the fence about getting this title, I'll probably watch some more let's plays and look for a few reviews before making a decision.

Moltke71 -> RE: Tutorials: Introduction - Combat - Time (11/20/2017 9:14:05 PM)

One thing to bear in mind is that TOAW IV isn't a game in the usual sense. It doesn't concentrate on a particular battle, war or period. Think of it as a scaffolding with game scenarios attached. It's a fine product but requires study to get the full experience.

I am not trying to discourage you at all, just an attempt at perspective. I understand you are looking for intel on which to base a decision for purchase. I have only watched a few 'Let's Plays' and they have been poorly done by people with obviously little experience and knowledge in the game. I think they just like to post videos. Reviews are usually by jealous and/or disgruntled folks who twist things out of reality.
Good Luck!
