I THINK I'd like to include this as an option to be displayed on the unit counters, but I can't find this term "Defending terrain check" in the manual anywhere. What does this value tell me?

I believe that Defending Terrain Check is the DF modified by terrain.

1. Saw it as one of the many options for display on the unit counters.
2. Bob: Your answer certainly makes sense: that it would be a statement of defensive value of the terrain. I assume also that "DF modified by terrain" refers to a single-unit value, rather than that of the whole stack.

Yes, but there is also a stack version as well.
