Wow, turning into a novel! It certainly is a good read. Great examples. I think your capturing very well why folks love this game. Also the strategies, supplies, etc. one should consider instead of just pushing counters forward. Keep it going.

My hopes are with you that when the Mongol horde appears with the frigid winds behind them, you'll be drinking hot tea in Moscow!

Well thank you very much. I'll try to do even better.

There's a situation up north near Murmansk where the Finns have rough parity with the Soviet defender but the combination
of attack strength and readiness and proficiency has rendered the two combatants roughly equal and not much progress
is being made about it. Attacks so far went nowhere and I want to avoid any more losses from the Finn units for very
little benefit. So they are both dug in staring at each other through the binoculars.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 9:32:39 AM)

The Soviets found one of the places where my defense was skimpy and drove a unit into my lines making progress and
threatening one of my HQ units so the solution I've come up with is to retreat one of my LCU's backward to occupy
the hex where the HQ unit is. I hate to move backward after having fought so hard for the more distant hexes but
sometimes it's necessary.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 10:04:53 AM)

Have I showed you the Smolensk area right now? As you can see there's been fierce fighting going on in this area and
the Axis units are worn down. Part of that may be due to the fact that the supply level isn't extremely high just yet.
I've got units turning red on the front lines due to Soviet determined attacks and I'll either have to pull back or find
yet another unit that I need to replace. I'm running low on units right now.

I've been away from the AAR answering questions on the forum and sending an email and I don't remember what I've shown
you already dear reader, so this may be a repeat but this is the tri-cities area down south right now and as you can see
I'm about to approach the river crossings over the main river down there and progress will come to a slow crawl. Which
may be a good thing because I need to extend the rails down there anyway. Give those folks some supply to do their jobs.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 10:26:23 AM)

There's a situation that has come up at Kaniv that I'd like to tell you about: The Soviets have been railing people
in from out east and he has made a pile of them in one of the river crossings and he's trying psycological warfare on
me trying to scare me into piling on the people too. They have something approaching 9 divisions and here I have only
one, plus some AA to keep Elmer off my back. He likes to bomb recalcatrant units, stubborn units, hard places.

So it's a target rich environment we have here. All those planes I have on INT missions need to make a detour to this
river crossing and bomb that hex. It's cherry red dense and the losses for the Soviets might be enormous. I have to
do this.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 10:34:39 AM)

The Soviets don't have any AA in that hex which is a shame, and so the losses will probably set a record for this game
to date. I'll have to give you a full report about the attack because I explect this attack to leave a mark.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 10:44:15 AM)

I decided that the Soviet losses would be higher yet if I included a ground contingent to the bombing. I'm hoping the CS
will compensate for the fact that I have only a single division making a one-dot attack and I'm wondering how high the
losses will be even on a single-dot attack. We'll see. This attack will help win the war so I gotta do it.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 11:00:28 AM)

Down south I've captured another way to get into the Crimea and it's the one spot in the major river where it turns into
a minor river for one hex so it's fordable and I can get units across there. That leaves only the two major river
crossings K-town and D-town and those are going to be a hard row to hoe. I'll just mostly hold the Soviets in place on
the ground while I pound them from the air for a while to soften them up a little.

marion61 -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 2:23:31 PM)

Can you not use ferry/bridging units to ford that major river and get behind those units guarding the crossings?

That would be a good idea and yes, of course you could except for the fact that except for that one spot the rest
of the river hexes are flooded marsh which is impassable. D'oh. So That sort of forces me to do it the hard way.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 2:44:27 PM)

Here's what's happening up north right now. I'm counting on the fact that most of the
Soviet units are dug in around Leningrad and aren't keen on attacking my assets near
the bottlneck on the coast. So far so good. They aren't much in the way of combat
power but they DO cut the supply to Soviet units to the west of there. And the good
news is that I've found enough individual units to make up about two divisions and
they are headed north to arrive over the next several turns. Finally, more people.
That's probably leaving other areas in the lurch but all's fair in war.

EDIT: I might ought to explain what's going on with the aircraft. The Stuka's are
assigned to attack the BB and are escorted by all the Finn fighters assigned to this
attack. The game engines assigns fighters arriving in the attacked hex as escorts
automatically whether you want it to or not.

marion61 -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 2:52:41 PM)

Not all the hexes along the river are flooded marsh. Several of them are just marsh/super river, which your ferry/bridging units can use to cross at. Might make taking Kiev and getting those other crossing easier to get at.[8D]

Hot Dog.......now we're talking. I had completely missed that. Thanks for the heads up.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 7:29:09 PM)

This is the Smolensk area right now. We're still fighting over the rail headed for Moscow. We can't win the war
without it. So the fighting is fierce and bitter. Units are starting to evaporate in attacks.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 7:53:44 PM)

And in the tri-city area I'm approaching the north-south river and that means we're out of the area where we don't know
where the Soviet units are and needing big divisions to force the river crossings. So all the recon units can move off
to the Zhlobin area to get on the east side of Kiev.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/8/2017 8:21:26 PM)

And down south in the Odessa area I see how the supply level is increasing slowly. The rails approach this image from
the west about 10 hexes and it's slowly being repaired. This higher level of supply will eventually allow the invasion
of the Crimea by the Rumanians predominately. I need the Hungarians on the front lines on the east side of Kiev.

Here's the results of the airstrike by the Stuka's on the Soviet naval unit and it looks like I sank 3 DD's and
damaged a couple of CA's. One out of every nine planes were shot down I think.

Here's the results of the airstrike on the river crossing near Kiev, the one that has hundreds of bombers are involved.
And it appears that the Axis losses are pretty heavy. D'oh.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 4:55:19 AM)

Here's Pskov now, in round three. The Axis units are spread out in little groups holding back little groups. If I had
more people I would have a proper front line and everything. This is working for now. Elmer is truely stupid.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 1:03:34 PM)

Okie dokie......I've moved everybody and all the combat is done and we're going to the next turn and the combat results
list is presented one last time and I see there were 53 battles this turn by the Axis.....that's how severe the fighting
is going on. The Soviets hardly ever reach that number though.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 1:41:44 PM)

This is the situation in the NW of the front lines. I'm developing a pocket of Soviet stuff. The front lines in this
area are iffy and could be broken at any of several points but so far it's workikng.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 1:59:34 PM)

This is the situation near Pskov and the fighting is still going on and has been since the beginning of the game. There's
been at least one battle near here since the beginning and I'm just rotating units in and back to rest. Rest and go back
in. I'm running through some replacements in this area. It's worse around Moscow however.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 2:05:42 PM)

This is the situation around the NE of Kiev area right now. I'm still fighting over the river crossings and it's looking
like I'm going to have to extend to the east quite a bit to outflank the Soviet defenders. Which I'm going to have to
do at some point anyway, might as well see if it's possible now. May not be possible due to supply considerations.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 2:43:15 PM)

North of Smolensk quite a ways is Veliky Luki and this is the situation there right now. I've defeated a Soviet
defender and now have gotten into his backfield and this is another occasion where I don't have the reserves to
thrust into this boon. I'm in his backyard and there's no dog and the back door is open. No need to break a window.
If I had just one more division I think I could safely keep this back door open.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 2:49:05 PM)

This is the Smolensk area right now and I appear to have found a hole to drive through. Too bad I don't have the
reserves to follow through with this boon. I need to establish a reserve by breaking the units down into there
pieces leaving some at full strength for counterattacks.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Workshop for the new guys - Directive 21 (D21) (12/9/2017 3:12:11 PM)

This is the area just west of Bryansk and as you can see there's a severe shortage of units and all I need now is one
more Soviet unit to make the whole thing collapse.

9% is only 1 in 11, and only 11 of the 52 aircraft in the loss column were actually shot down, the rest just have a bunch of holes that need patched up before they're combat ready again.
