This is a photo of my dad and buddies on leave in Shanghai-sometime after the war had ended. He was a navy corpsman and they were sent there post occupation to help with public health issues. He made the Pacific theater as a very late stage so did not get demobilized as fast as some of his fellow servicemen. My dad is the skinny little guy in the middle.

The rickshaw guy on the right looks like a charging PLA soldier.

I bet those signs in English predated the war considerably.

Yep, America was a fairly isolated country up until the war happened. Travel was expensive and only something that the wealthy could afford. For most of these young men, it was the highlight of their lives. I would have given anything myself to see Shanghai in 1946. Not sure when this photo was taken though. May have been late 45.

Very, very cool. From what I've read, the post-war to pre-Communist days of Shanghai (i.e. 1945 to 1949) were good fun.

Cheers,
CC
