FE2 - Opened it to check out the custom graphics. Pretty good job.

Then I started scrolling around, zoomed all the way out and kept scrolling amazed at the size of the map and the quantity of units placed. Zoomed back down and started checking out the various units and was - overwhelmed. War in the East at the regimental level!

Who ever designed this deserves much respect. The detail, the research the sheer scope of this project. Awesome. Beautiful.

BUT! It's the kind of scenario/game that in the old days when they came in boxes with huge paper maps and 1000's of card board counters accompanied by a 250 page rule book you took it out and fiddled with everything. You gently unfolded the maps and laid 'em out carefully only to fold them back up just as carefully and gently return them to the box. You took out the many sheets of die cut counters and scoped 'em all, put 'em back in the box, took out the rule book and promised yourself to read the entire thing but you never do and the box and all it's contents go up into the closet only to occasionally be removed and fondled but never to be played - at least not if you had a wife, kids or a girlfriend and probably not even if one was a single nerd braniac with all the time needed to play the thing even if it was solitaire.

That's how I see FE2...

Come on - no way. Not playable - at least not by anyone less than a savant. Too many units, even zoomed out its difficult to get the big picture. 450 turns!! And I can't see a single turn lasting less than a couple of hours and that would be blowing thru the turn with little thought given to anything other than just moving forward - always forward. The air war, the ground war and I'm going to assume there's even a naval war to fight. Even with multiplayer and multiple commanders per side (does TOAW 4 support multiple players per side) it would still probably take at least 2 or 3 years to finish, maybe.

Nope...

No freaking way!

Also not my cup of tea but... no one is forcing you to play it. There are guys fond of these kind of monsters, plenty of smaller scenarios for the rest. That's the beauty of TOAW.

If I recall correctly Fogger was playing somebody PBEM a game of FITE2
and he and his opponent got to lilke turn 117 or so I think. And
Fogger is married I believe. I wonder what he did in his spare time.

i played FITE in the TOAWIII days and its a hell of a scenario at PBEM. good ebb and flow

FitE was fun but some of the bugs that no one knew existed kind of made it not so good. Should be a much better scenario now that they seem to be squashed. Takes more than a bit of dedication for certain. With the new BTS it might be a totally different game. The regimental scale of FitE2 would be kind of tedious.

Well - since I'm 66 one imagines the answer to your question must be - yes.

ASIDE: Some of you may wanna go back and read the 1st 2/3 of my original post. Nothing but respect for the designer of FITE2. The guy should be a game designer if he isn't already.

My point is that unless one is either independently wealthy who doesn't have to work or a hermit how do you find time to play it?

And yes I know no one is forcing me to play it - goes without saying. I don't believe I implied I was or even felt obligated. Am just amazed that there are those that do - though I imagine if one took a poll that the percent of matrixgames gamers that do would be very small, and in the words of Spock - miniscule.

you're still welcome to pass judgement on my Tutorial 'XX series. And yes, the FitE2 team are state of the art designers... but what a monster. I stick to operational 'challenges', shall we say?

Where is this FITE2 scenario? I looked under WWII misc and Eastern Front and couldn't find it.

Try the Custom Graphics folder. It's not in the Misc. or Eastern Front folder.

Hey I'm with you, except that I think you are underestimating the number of guys that would play this monsters.
FITE was one of the most popular scenarios in TOAW III, and I'm sure you have seen the whining fest that exploded when some newer payers found out taht some of these monsters were not meant to play against the AI...
Heck, there were even some guys that wanted to resolve the tactical battles on another game [:D]

I love the monster scenarios, and smaller ones. Love them all.

At 61 and retired, reading and playing war games all day, hell yea I have time to play!!! TOAW beats the heck out of work any day! Actually, anything beats the heck out of work any day.

FITE2 is a joy to play, even in solo. The trick is don't get daunted on the first turn, just play. Great experience.

War gaming is not all, I also have five motorcycles that pull me away, but war gaming is a passion that never dies (till I do anyway), and TOAW is one of the tops. And FITE2 is tops in that area. Of course, WW2 east front is my favorite, so I'm biased. Still, a classic scenario. Don't decide not to play because it "appears too large". Go for it, you'll be happy you did.

Well...I am impressed with this FITE2 scenario.

I too am 61 and retired. I live up on a mountain in a very rural area that typically sees the snow keep away any unwanted visitors.

So I reckon I qualify for the hermit aspect, at least during the winter months so I have more that enough time to play a game of this magnitude just so long as I have electricity.

I am currently on turn 184 (24 March 1943). Because it is an earlier version I am not allowed to post the AAR. There were some bugs in this version that have been fixed in the version that came with the public copy of TOAW4. Willie and I are playing on to the end to ensure there are no more bugs and all the events fire correctly.

I only ever play the German player in FITE so I can only give play time from that position. In the early part of the game (June 41 to Dec 41) my turns were taking about 2hrs per turn. Once the front settles down the turns take a lot less. Last turn was about 30 mins. I currently have 2,196 units in play.

FITE2 is like crack cocaine. Once you start playing there is no other game.

Just for the record I am 63, retired (accountant / CFO) and do 3 days a week as a volunteer worker for charity. FITE2 and beekeeping are my hobbies.

I took a look at it when the bmp's still worked and it looked pretty complicated to me. All the units were a different
color combination, etc. But now that the bmp's don't work anymore what in the world happened to the color combinations?

How do you feel about the shift to one bmp sheet to work with now, Ricki dude?

Oh, the poor guy that contributed free labor designing the formation cooperation color schemes, coloring counter sheets in paint, setting up the StandardButtons file to be coordinated, putting together the Color Scheme diagram for players reference, and then designing custom icons for FitE2. All of that work to be trashed by IV without regard. I wonder who that poor guy was ?

I am playing it against the AI now, turn 8, great fun !!

Germans have taken Minsk, stand before Ostrov and have taken Kinishev

Time saving trick was to do the "RKKA is paralyzed", so only local defense (to the death in the north and middle) and a fighting retreat in the South west

Most german units are only AI programmed till the big rivers, so the trick is to throw as mainly units in their way as possible

I did a few turns with Fogger months ago and I plan to do the entire scenario at some point. I am no stranger to very large scenarios and I have tips on how to dramatically speed things up in all scenarios. I took the screen shot from my largest one, World at War 1939-1945. I was able to apply these methods in the FITE2 and it makes it quite manageable. They are very important when you are moving troops by rail or by sea long distances.

Spacebar is good, I also hit 'Caps Lock' when making the big moves [i.e., railing several units from Berlin to Dnepropetrovsk].

Yes,FITE is a monster game, I played a while back on TOAW III. A turn I estimated was about 2-3 hours, I am pretty adept at squeezing 7-10 rounds per turn. And just the play-back took approx. 20 min. But it was enjoyable, I liked it, and I am gearing up for another odyssey, you really have to be "psyched" up for it. So, in closing it depends how much time you want to devote to TOAW, it is a commitment.

Recently bought the game and after reading here, I pulled up fire in the east....can someone tell me what all that sea of pale blue lines are...they are so thick you can hardly see the map...like arrows coming from the german side going east. I suspect I can turn them off but I dont know what they are.

I think those are the tracks for the AI. Did you install the beta patch? IIRC it fixes that bug.

1st, as Meyer said, mak sure you got the latest Beta, which is 4.0.1.23. The blue lines are the PO/AI objectives... they can be switched on/off with the '/' and '?' key.

Geez, I hope that the colors and the icons work on TOAW IV?

I am still playing a Beta version game against the main designer (Søren Gaun) so haven't installed TOAW IV yet.
