How is the single player game (vs. the AI)? There's no lets plays on you tube to observe, which is a little odd, even for an older game. I would stay away from a gem I haven't been able to see except the forum and patches for an old game are both fairly active.

I'm afraid it's not the best right now. If you play England it's good.. France, and it's a walk in the park (after you see that England AI will continually cross the Lille with 1-4 units in a corps and sacrifice themselves). all game..

If you turn off the crossing in the options, the game is pretty good now. Most of the bugs are gone with the declarations on minors, and major powers going to war over a minor they will never win.. (Russia declaring on England for control of Sweeden). I only play when I have dedicated time to sit and play through a game, e-mail takes too long and I will forget what I was trying to do before I get another turn.. Since the last patches when England started this destructive behavior, it was getting pretty good. I keep crossing my fingers that they will eventually get to an IP type server play where you can log in with members at the same time, and sit through several turns.

It's not a bad game, and good to play to learn against the computer before taking on play by e-mail if you are looking for more of the real game. I am still hoping it will develop into a game that you can play with any number of players and have the AI fill in as seamlessly as possible.

I purchased it a week ago and it’s more or less the only game I’m playing at the moment. Started the grand campaign as Austria against AI and had a lot of fun so far. The French kicked my arse on several occasions and seems to be more aggressive the closer you get to the border. The AI controlled nations are quite active, e.g. trying to influence minors, declaring wars, suing for peace, moving their troops etc.

Having said that, there are times where the AI does weird things, like:

- Marching through allied territory and not caring about supply, thus losing factors or whole corps due to attrition

- Sitting with a huge stack in one area and not moving at all for several months

- Moving units back and forth between two areas for reasons I don’t know

But, these current shortcomings aside, it’s an addictive game that still gets the occasional patch. I would give it a go if you’re into that period in history, especially with the current sale going on.
