Dr. Foo -> NordKapp (12/20/2017 6:12:16 PM)

So I found this little gem called NordKapp. Time period is mid-1980's, WWIII has broken out in Europe, game focuses on a Soviet invasion of Norway in an attempt to capture ports and airfields. Game last 10 turns, 16km per hex, Battalion sized units.

I got the map and the counters but no documentation. Does anyone have the game and can scan the rules? I mostly just need set up and reinforcement schedule.

I'm going to try to convert it to TOAW IV. Game scale is 48 hours per turn since TOAW does not have 48 hour turn only one day or half-week I'll do one turn per day making the game last 20 turns.

For the Soviets, maneuverability and supply will be their biggest problem, for the Allies facing a larger force with tanks!

I think this would be a fun small game that can be played fairly quickly.

Sure thing, Magnum... attached the .PDF as .ZIP. Whenever in doubt, ask the Kraut ;)

AND, it has half-day turns already.

Talk about prompt service! Looks like the original TOAW scenario and probably even the boardgame lack realistic naval invasions which you could improve on. USSR had at least one brigade of naval infantry just waiting to pounce on Narvik. Perfect scenario idea to represent the new naval warfare stuff.

I agree this looks like a fun game. The TOAW COW game is not quite the board game, it's 5km per hex and half day turns with several additional units. I want to design a game more faithful to the board game. I may need to purchase the original Strategy & Tactics game from EBay.

I haven't played/tested the scenario and I am kinda known for being... shall we say, not a Navy person either ;) But hey... if you need a 'ferret' to dig out some old scenarios, the Oberst is your man :D

Steelwhip -> RE: NordKapp (12/20/2017 11:58:45 PM)

Nordkapp is GREAT. one of the best TSR era S&T games that was ever done. I did a module for it in Zun Tzu a couple years back. Still a great game.

Shadrach -> RE: NordKapp (12/22/2017 3:57:11 PM)

Wow - will deffo be following the progress of this, time-period and location very interesting material for a scenario. Will be happy to test once it's upgraded to TOAW4 with added features, although I'm not a very experienced player :)

Dr. Foo -> RE: NordKapp (12/29/2017 5:06:01 PM)

The game included in Strategy & Tactics #94 has some interesting game variables. There is the possibility that Finland and Sweden will remain neutral. Finland has a 40% chance to remain neutral and Sweden a 50% chance.

The game makes the argument that the Soviet's may ask Finland and Sweden for transit rights. Sweden and Finland may grant this request because the Soviets would only cut through very small portions of the country and there are not significant forces in the region to begin with.

OK, but how realistic is that? The game takes place in the 1980's and I'm not sure how pacifistic the governments were at the time. Is the variable just a cool twist or a real possibility if the Soviets applied enough diplomatic pressure.

DanNeely -> RE: NordKapp (12/29/2017 5:22:39 PM)

I've seen claims elsewhere that there was a secret agreement between Sweden and NATO that would've had the former joining in as a co-belligerent of the latter in the event of a general Warsaw Pact invasion. No idea if the person claiming such had any idea what he was talking about.

Finland's a more interesting case. On the one hand, only the main event being in Germany would prevent overwhelming Soviet force from rapidly overrunning the entire country. On the other hand, after the events of the late 30s and 40s I suspect the Finnish govt would have very large fears that if they let the Soviets in that they'd simply keep whatever they temporarily occupied to attack farther west.

Shadrach -> RE: NordKapp (12/29/2017 5:29:03 PM)

Hey we're still peed off at the Swedes for letting the troop trains through during the war. So I doubt they'll do anything that stupid again. Although, you never know with the Swedes, man... [8D]

I never understood the animosities - after all: https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Den_svensk-norske_union... you are like... cousins for Pete's sake. Kinda like the Germans, Austrians and the Swiss, no? The Nordic Wars of 1700s are over, Stian, no?

Dr. Foo -> RE: NordKapp (1/1/2018 6:39:36 AM)

Looking closely at the S&T game, I'm wondering if it's scenario blanching, or reality that all the F-111's and B-52's in the UK would be unavailable for Norway.

I get it, the scenario assumes there is a greater war in Europe and NordKapp is a sideshow, but still, as one NATO observer noted, “World War III may not be won on the northern flank, but it could definitely be lost there.” Surely, NATO would put more airpower there, at least some F-111's.

Not seen this scenario but I would expect to see at least one carrier group from one of the NATO countries.

All you get from the UK is one USAF F-15, F-16 and F-4 squadron. From the RAF one squadron of Jaguars and AV-8B. No Tornado's or F-111. The game states that a larger war has broken out in Europe and naval action is taking place around the GIUK gap. Norway, has F-16 and F-105's.

So I'm guessing NATO would be stretched thin. The Soviet's have an impressive array of air superiority and ground attack aircraft.

I thought that the time period for this scenario was after 1975 or so and that by then
the F-105's would have long been retired from the scene. F-100's went bye-bye in
1972 followed by the F-105's sometime thereafter.

Most likely F-5 are meant, not F-105.
The Royal Norwegian Air Force received 108 Freedom Fighters: 16 RF-5A, 78 F-5A and 14 F-5B. The first 64 were received as military aid. They were in use by several squadrons, the first and last being 336 Squadron receiving the first aircraft in February 1966 (formal handing-over ceremony a month later), and deactivating in August 2000. Three aircraft were kept flying until 2007, serving with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for tests in the "Eye of the Tiger"-programme, developing a new seeker head for Naval Strike Missile and Joint Strike Missile. The aircraft received under military aid were handed off to Greece and Turkey. Of the aircraft bought by the Norwegian government, nine were used in exchange with U.S. authorities for submarines of the Kobben class.[92] In October 2011 five F-5A single seaters were given to aircraft maintenance schools around the country; including Skedsmo, Sola, Bodø and Bardufoss high schools, and the Royal Norwegian Air Force's training center at Kristiansand Airport, Kjevik. The aircraft were disassembled at Moss Airport, Rygge before delivery to the schools. Of the ten remaining Norwegian F-5s, eight F-5B two-seaters were still for sale as of 2011, six of whom were stored in Norway and two in the United States. The two aircraft in the United States had been approved for sale to the American businessman Ross Perot Jr. in 2008, but the deal was blocked by the US government.[93] Three survivors are exhibited at the Norwegian Armed Forces Aircraft Collection, two at Norsk Luftfartsmuseum in Bodø and one at Flyhistorisk Museum, Sola, near Stavanger.

Really looks so nice and peaceful there... not, how shall I put it... like, you know what I mean, Stian. So tempted to visit Norway, but how much is a 0,5l can of beer at a supermarket or a draft at a boozer?
