There were several photos and diary entries from some of the men we had first learned about by watching the Spielberg/Hanks series “The Pacific” … men like Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie.

There were also interesting Japanese propaganda pieces, bragging about the damage they had been inflicting on US forces in that part of the world.

Next stop: the Peleliu Peace Memorial Park on the southwestern tip of the island. The Japanese government built this memorial in 1985 for those who died on the islands of Palau during WWII.

The monument is a concrete block with basalt, supported by concrete slabs.

From here, we could see Angaur island to the sw 7 miles away(now called Ngeaur). Our guide, Jerry, said the Germans had introduced monkeys to the island back in their day when they were mining phosphate on the island. Now, the monkeys rule the place!

On Sept 17, the 321st & 322nd Infantry Regiments of the 81st Infantry Division land.

Then, it was off to lunch. We went to a public picnic area and ran into a contingent of foreign guests(not pictured) who had been invited to Palau to celebrate the inauguration of the President. It made for crowded conditions.

I spotted a tent with a photo of bombs on it so went inside and found “Cleared Ground Demining.”

Mark VII -> RE: Trip to Palau and Peleliu (1/1/2018 5:32:38 PM)

This is an amazing non-profit group of people who has been training Palauans to recognize, clear and dispose of unexploded ordinance buried since WWII.

Mark VII -> RE: Trip to Palau and Peleliu (1/1/2018 5:38:31 PM)

They were explaining that since the whole island of Peleliu was a battlefield, there is lots of unexploded ordinance potentially anywhere.

if you are planning on building something you can request Cleared Ground Demining to make sure the land is safe.

After lunch and just up the road is a Japanese Zero 20 yards into the jungle

Mark VII -> RE: Trip to Palau and Peleliu (1/1/2018 5:50:47 PM)

It is thought that its original location would have been somewhere on the airfield. After the Americans captured the airfield, it was pushed out of the way and the jungle reclaimed it.

Jerry told us that veterans of this battle are always amazed at how the jungle has taken back the land they remember to be bombed and stripped of vegetation.
