fruitgnome -> A possibility to use a star base in deep space as refuelling point (12/28/2017 2:57:08 PM)

The problem with stations in deep space is, that their cargo will not be filled with fuel.
A possibility:
Use the game editor and set a chlorine gas cloud (fits best, I think) with a size of 100 (fits best) and add caslon and hydrogen. Then add a star base with gas extractors and docking bays, much cargo space and repair bots (no commerce center).
Because I think it is like cheating to set the star base to your empire, set it instead to independant.
Every empire can use it with state and civilian ships and so its fair and not cheating. Maybe their will be great fights like defending special points (game mode in other games like capture the flag or hold bases).
It is possible to patrol around this station. The ai will not boarding this station. I tested it some time and it works.

If the station will be boarded by ai or if you want it different:
Build the station as big as you want and well armed and defended and set it to independent, then try to board it and from this point your enemy will maybe try to board your refuilling base in deep space.

Or cheat and set the station to your empire. [;)]

Have you other ideas? What are your opinions?

Update:
Interesting!
A pirate faction is defending this independent station with a lot of ships [8D] [:D]

Edit the station is much-loved:

Interesting.... will have a look at that and see if it can be used in my Star Wars and Star Trek mods.

If you set the starbase as a Fleet's home base, it will have priority over fuel stocks, so it should start to fill up with Caslon and Hydrogen.
All you have to do, is to set a Fleet to defend the base using Fleet Postures.

If I recall, aren't those big giant ship gas extractors meant to serve as deep space supply points?

Tested. It doesn't work.

Resupply ships need something to deploy on it.

OK, I actually do this. It's like a galactic gas station. Just make sure to build at a gas cloud or gas giant that has the type of fuel you use,and preferably with no other resources. If you want it strictly for refueling your ships, DO NOT put a commerce module on it. Without the commerce module, the base fills up its tanks, then its cargo with the fuel you use and it only gets used to refuel ships. No merchants will move this fuel if you leave the commerce module off the base.

But that is not in deep space, is it?

why do you have to use the game editor ?

you can simply build such a gas base with your building ships.

or not ?

No, it has to be in a gas cloud at the very least. But technically, gas clouds are deep space, since they can't be colonized.

I can tell you it works out great, with a few of these bases I rarely have the problem of warships not being fueled.

Technically clouds are systems. New users will notice that when they fail to deploy their resupply ships ;-)

But indeed, with the correct scenario, a star base with good cargo capacity, extractors and some defense works wonderfully as a stationary resupply ship. But personally I would most likely just end up with resupply ships in those positions (since I am not a new user...).

It seem like I am just about the only one that enjoy resupply ship play, though.
