Janaka -> Screen Resolution (12/29/2017 2:42:02 PM)

Just bought WITP AE.

Screen looks stretched and text is blurred. Tried a bit of search-fu and it seems the game doesn't support wide screen resolutions but I see the recommendation to play in windowed mode.

So, not meaning to look like a complete techno-idiot (which admittedlyI am) - Can I change in-game resolution and if not how do I display the game in window mode?

HansBolter -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/29/2017 2:45:27 PM)

The game does support wide screen resolutions.

I run it at 1366 x 768 on my laptop and can easily run it at 1980x1020 on my desktop, but that resolution makes everything way too tiny for my tired old eyes to be able to read so I run it at 1280x720 on the desktop.

Differing resolutions and windowed mode, along with a plethora of other customizations can be achieved by adding various switches to the command line in your desktop shortcut.

Can you explain what this means please?

btd64 -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/29/2017 2:54:23 PM)

Welcome aboard. Right click on the game icon and select Properties. Then on the Target line delete the info after the ". Then add -px#### -py#### where #### is your resolution for the x and y of your screen. For example;
-skipVideo -fd -px1920 -py1080 -altFont -cpu2 -deepColor -dd_sw
This is my Target line and you can see my rez is 1920x1080. The other switches I use are for win 10 and some short cuts. I hope this helps....GP

Not without being in front of my computer at home where I can take screen shots to show you.

Am at work currently.

Tried looking quickly for a thread with the list of switches but couldn't find it.

I'm sure some one else will come along soon and provide you with the details you are looking for.

Hang in there. There is a solution to get the game running in the configuration you want.

Janaka -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/29/2017 3:19:50 PM)

Hi btd64,

I followed your instruction and added -px1920 -py1080 to the target line, but nothing seems to have changed for me.

Hans,

Thanks for the reply. I'll check back on the forum later this evening.

ALSO, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE LATEST UPDATE. SWITCHES DO NOT WORK IN OLDER VERSIONS OF APP:

OR BETA

Janaka -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/29/2017 7:35:02 PM)

Hi InfiniteMonkey,

Thanks for posting. I have the latest update and have followed the advice in the thread you linked to.

It seems I can run at the correct resolution in a tiny window that's too small for my ageing eyesight or stick to the default which is somewhat blurry and the plane graphics look no better than an amorphous blob.

Not sure what to do for the best here.

I know it was originally developed a few years ago now, but I feel that for a game that still sells at a high price, I am disappointed it doesn't support the most common resolutions of today.

This is the trigger I have set to run with: "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe" -f -pxf1920 -pyf1080 -archive -deepColor -multiaudio -dd_sw -altFont

Korvar -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/29/2017 7:58:27 PM)

Welcome to the game/forums!

There is full support for widescreen up to about 3000 x 1500 or so (if I recall correctly) as of the latest official update (and latest unofficial releases). It's just a matter of configuration.

You'll want to create a shortcut to the game's executable file (.exe) in the game directory if you want to play the official release or in the "Beta2" subdirectory if you have installed and want to play the latest unofficial release.

As for the use of switches in the shortcut, you'll want to add them at the end of the quoted path in the "Target" field as shown below (with one space after the last quotation mark, then the switches):

Keep in mind that the "dashes" are the minus sign and that all switches are case sensitive. For resolution configuration you'll want to use the -f OR -w switch (fullscreen or windowed) in addition to the -pxfxxxx and -pyfyyyy switches where the "xxxx" and "yyyy" represent the numerical resolution dimensions. The 'f' in 'pyf' / 'pxf' stands for 'forced' resolution - it is the preferred method of setting resolution.

There is also a readme file in the game directory that explains most of the game's switches - but do not copy/paste directly from the .pdf file. It uses the wrong dash characters and they won't work. Go ahead and re-type them using the minus key (next to the plus key).

Edit:
For reference, here is the complete Target field in my shortcut:
"C:\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -wd -pxf1920 -pyf1080 -archive -deepColor -multiaudio -dd_sw -altFont

You'll most likely want to use the -dd_sw switch, as the game's interface can be slow without it (except in the newest version of Windows 10, ver 1709, the opposite seems to be true from initial reports). -altFont improves the readability of the game's font, and -deepColor improves the color depth. -archive is used for generating the files needed for the 3rd party utilities Combat Reporter / WitP Tracker / Intel Monkey. -multiaudio resolves a possible misalignment of audio with multi-core processors.

The switches are a game of experimentation. Assuming you want to use 1920 x 1080 as your resolution, I think a good starting point for getting the graphics set up would be:

-f -pxf1920 -pyf1080 -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont

Reg -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/29/2017 8:02:56 PM)

Your problem is that you are applying the switches to "autorun.exe" which is just the startup menu utility.

The switches need to be applied to the game executable "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe"

Create a new shortcut with this command line:

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -f -pxf1920 -pyf1080 -archive -deepColor -multiaudio -dd_sw -altFont

Edit: Beaten by Korvar...

Janaka -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/30/2017 1:18:43 PM)

Woot!

I think I'm good to go.

Text is a little on the small size but I have full screen 1920x1080 res. [8D]

Edit. oops. Where are my manners? I forgot to say a big thank you to you all for helping me out here.

Thanks.

btd64 -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/30/2017 1:31:25 PM)

glad to hear you got it working. Try the -altFont switch and see if the words are easier to see....GP

Janaka -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/31/2017 1:17:54 PM)

Yes, I'm using -altFont.

Having run a complete turn now I have an annoying problem with the combat view box. It glitches and moves up and down about a 1/4" each way on my screen when its running combat displays. Any one else experience this?

Yes. My interpretation is that the PC does not have enough graphics processing power to quite keep up with the game. Bear in mind the game uses an older graphics interface standard so that does not mean you would see the same issue in other software.

On my PC I saw the same as you in both windowed mode and in full screen mode. I bought a graphics card (was using built in graphics) but not a really powerful one. Now I get that in windowed mode but no longer get it in full screen mode. I watch the combat replay in full screen mode then use windowed mode to enter orders.

Korvar -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/31/2017 4:05:39 PM)

It wouldn't hurt to try running it in the other mode (windowed/fullscreen) from what you're currently using to see if you can replicate the issue there. I haven't seen any graphical glitches like that, and I use a cheap graphics card (an nVIDIA GTX 950). The next generation GTX 1050s look to be about 120 quid in the UK. It won't run the latest shooter games at full settings, but it would be more than enough for 2D based games like WitPAE.

Do you mean me or Janaka? I just described to you what it does on my PC in both modes.

Korvar -> RE: Screen Resolution (12/31/2017 6:01:33 PM)

I meant Janaka - should've quoted him.

ekcut -> RE: Screen Resolution (7/15/2018 7:48:27 PM)

Let me start off by admitting, I am not the smartest cat around.

I bought War in the Pacific in May, and immediately had issues running it and I could not play. The on screen text is not readable.

Now I didn't realize that "Admiral Edition" was a totally separate game. I just though it was a "bells and whistles" version of War in the Pacific. Maybe it came with a scratch and sniff sticker or there was a Captains hat that got mailed to you or something...so I opted for the cheapest option and got War in the Pacific. Now that is totally on me, as I didn't actually read the details start to finish. (although, many of the descriptions are word for word identical between the two games...I just didn't read further down in the AE to find out it isa completely different came. MY BAD totally.

Any link to the WitP message board takes me to this forum.

Do you know if any of the fixes here, will work on WitP. I have tried to the best of my abilities to fix my issues, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I don't want to buy AE, if I may end up having similar issues with it. Already I have $60+ in a game I can not play. Don't want to drop $90+ more on a roll of the dice.

I have attached a screenshot of my issues. I have attempted the Korvar's resolution fix, and also tried running in older windows modes and have had no luck. Any help would be appreciated! This looks like a great game!

BillBrown -> RE: Screen Resolution (7/15/2018 7:58:40 PM)

I am quite sure that witP did not support the command line switches.

btd64 -> RE: Screen Resolution (7/15/2018 8:08:05 PM)

I have not looked at your image, but here is the link to the Classic WITP. You may find the answer in there. my advise, AE works in win10. You just have to find the right switch combo. And there are many threads on the subject. AE has many better features. I my mind Waypoints is the big one....GP
