Turn 85 - Axis Turn 9th July 1941 The Axis forces withdraw from the area west of Sofafi but seemingly have no intention of giving up the southern approaches to the Halfaya Pass. The panzers attack, and force to retreat, the Hussars on the left of the line. Meanwhile Tobruk receives more of the same.... Turn 85 9th July 1941 Time for a bit of a stock-take prior to deciding what to do next. Any action I take needs to be carefully considered for the usual reasons: a) I don't know anything about the enemy other than what I am next to b) I don't know where the panzers are (except 1 battalion I know to be west of Buq Buq). c) I have to keep a constant eye on my withdrawals situation. It would really help if I could have confidence in the withdrawals and reinforcements position. Sadly I don't and so I have to make the best of it.... Royal Navy Every battleship and cruiser is damaged. Repairs are slow in fixing. The RN won't be a factor for a while.... Turn 85 9th July 1941 RAF and allied air forces I have 17 Squadrons (13 operational) available. 8 (5 operational) Hurricane sqns - 175/192 aircraft - 71 in reserve - 6 replacements per turn 4 (4 operational) Blenheim sqns - 88/96 aircraft - 61 in reserve - 3 replacements per turn 2 (2 operational) Tomahawk sqns - 43/48 aircraft - 16 in reserve - 2 replacements per turn 1 (1 operational) Albacore sqn - 10/10 aircraft - 0 in reserve - 0 replacements per turn 1 (0 operational) Beaufighter sqn - 18/24 aircraft - 1 in reserve - 1 replacement per turn 1 (1 operational) Gladiator sqn - 18/24 aircraft - 0 in reserve - 0 replacement per turn Overall this is not a bad situation. I have air superiority 5 vs 4 although devoncop has a better interception % (0% vs 1%).

Turn 85 9th July 1941 I limit myself this turn to mopping up the Italian units around El Hamra-Sofafi. I am not strong enough yet to take any further action west of Buq Buq, and pull back slightly to better organise the line. Turn 86 - Axis Turn 12th July 1941 The Axis content themselves with destroying the company of Mahrattas that got too close to their airfield at Fort Maddelenna, and bombarding forces northwest of Sofafi, west of Buq Buq and - of course - at Tobruk. Turn 86 12th July 1941 Plenty of movement this turn as I reorganise my forces, but there will be no further moves forward. The purpose of the original raid was simply to try and catch the enemy unawares and to take advantage of a thrust along the coast road. It was never meant to be a major offensive given the forces available. I think its clear that I've run out of steam and the enemy are now organised. I therefore limit myself to bombardments and thought I might as well try an airfield attack (and accept the loss of my Wellingtons). As it happened the Wellington squadron survived (just!) but a Hurricane squadron that went to assist was wiped out..... All that for the destruction of just 6 enemy aircraft....mind you it looks like it was a fighter airfield....! In better news two enemy bomber squadrons were furballed and I thinned out the besiegers of Tobruk a little more - albeit they were company formations. Turn 88 - Axis Turn 19th July 1941 The Axis go easy on Tobruk. I don't know if this is the calm before the storm i.e. resting units for a big push, or because units are being rushed to the Halfaya Pass. Air activity is quiet but I lose another couple of companies out on reconnaissance.... I wish there was another way of getting intel. Turn 88 19th July 1941 I decide to give the advance one more go. All effort is expended on the southern and western approaches to the Halfaya Pass. Turn 88 19th July 1941 South of Fort Capuzzo another Savona infantry battalion - accompanied by Bersaglieri - are mauled and forced to retreat by a largely Indian infantry force. A gap has formed in the Commonwealth front line, but I am hoping the Italians won't be strong enough to exploit this - unless of course they have reinforcements behind..... Turn 89 19th July 1941 Okay so what do I know? - devoncop continues to maintain a thin screen that he invites me to attack. - The pressure against Tobruk has dropped - I don't know where the 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions are All this leads me to believe he is setting a trap..... time I think to try and pull back before those tanks spring into action in my flank! First things first I have a quick check on force availability. The Royal Navy are slowly repairing, but it will be some while yet before they will be in a position to sortie - and Barham and Euryalus won't be taking part in anything anytime soon. I wonder if Barham will even repair before she's sunk. The air force situation is mixed - there have been some heavy losses given the state of some of the squadrons (its a bit annoying that we don't get to know everything that happens). Currently I have 18 squadrons (only 10 are operational): 9 (5 operational) Hurricane sqns - 178/216 aircraft - 80 in reserve - 6 replacements per turn 4 (3 operational) Blenheim sqns - 91/96 aircraft - 57 in reserve - 3 replacements per turn 2 (0 operational) Tomahawk sqns - 34/48 aircraft - 13 in reserve - 2 replacements per turn 1 (0 operational) Albacore sqn - 8/10 aircraft - 1 in reserve - 0 replacements per turn 1 (1 operational) Beaufighter sqn - 19/24 aircraft - 2 in reserve - 1 replacement per turn 1 (1 operational) Gladiator sqn - 18/24 aircraft - 0 in reserve - 0 replacement per turn Frankly the fighters could do with a rest but if I am to stage a fighting withdrawal I need air cover! As part of the pull back I seek to tidy up the front line. I send a regiment of tanks and a battalion of infantry north to recce the situation. In doing so it appears that devoncop really has pulled back - from Bardia, Sollum and Fort Capuzzo. Those aircraft seen in the picture above have flown the nest. Turn 89 19th July 1941 I complete the pull-back. I lost no units in doing so and I guess that is because his screen was so thin they were not able to engage and disrupt the withdrawal. I notice the the sneaky wotsit is continuing to use his AA units as probes. An Italian unit gets so far as Fuka in an attempt to cut the coast road. The unit is destroyed but once again it appears my patrols are not good enough to stop this encroachment....

Turn 90 26th July 1941 The turn is spent pulling back further toward Sofafi. I can't get what the game plan is at the moment - except that turn his air force was highly active. Maybe that is the plan to take Tobruk using a massive air and artillery and land attack?

Turn 91 30th July 1941 An entire artillery regiment is evaporated trying to reach Tobruk by sea - they couldn't have got the one going in the opposite direction could they? [8\|] But what really cheeses me off is that a fighter squadron is wiped out too. Why does the program keep overriding my orders? I find the air game very frustrating in this regard. The Air Assistant is OFF, I've ordered all of my aircraft to rest but I keep losing them because they are sent into the air. Does anyone know why the game does this? Turn 92 3rd August 1941 Well I'm totally bemused. I lost an artillery unit for nothing. The Axis have pulled back so far there is now a land bridge from Bardia to Tobruk.
