sPzAbt653 -> Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/13/2018 1:16:51 AM)

Released in 1976 was a boardgame by Avalon Hill called The Russian Campaign. This one uses the same scale and scope, with custom graphics to look a bit like an old boardgame [:)]

As Variable Initiative is not working properly at this time, the temporary kluge of adding some 'Not in Play' units to an off-map area for the Axis will force the Axis to move first each turn.
EDIT: Variable Initiative is now a Game Option. Please turn this OFF. You no longer need to start in Hotseat to avoid Initiative swings when this new option is OFF.

Monthly Turns - Units will 'Surrender' !
[As unsupplied units will lose some equipment each turn, such units will generally evaporate when they begin a turn unsupplied, apparently due to losing a large amount of equipment in a Monthly Turn].

Looks very good. Reminds me of a game I bought called SC WWII [:)]

Bombur -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/13/2018 6:23:12 PM)

Great scenario, but the air combat model is too flawed, it has only Stukas, it could be improved by adding fighters and leve bombers to the air units.

Well... it's based as close as it gets with TOAW to the original, hence just the 3 Stukas (as in the original boardgame).

Colonel, you are a wealth of knowledge and huge asset to these forums. And Bombur, of Advanced Tactics fame I believe; my hat is off to you as well. Although it's 4F and I refuse to wear a hat [;)]

Silvanski -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/14/2018 3:38:23 AM)

nice work. it takes me back in time

Nicholas Bell -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/14/2018 4:18:46 AM)

Well done, Steve, although you forgot the mountains near Lvov. [:D] I'm playing it against the Soviet PO and it's giving me a tough time. It started out well, but the stacking limit is creating some problems with killer Elmer stacks. I was daydreaming of making use of all the hard research work done for FITE/Dir 21 and make this a divisional/corps level game instead of Korps/Army. Nine divisions in a hex would be a bit more realistic. Well, maybe when I retire in 10 years. [:)]

Rasputitsa -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/14/2018 9:00:17 AM)

An Eastern Front game that doesn't take your whole life to play, great, and a breath of Avalon Hill, even better. [8D]

Thanks, brilliant scenario.

Rasputitsa -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/14/2018 4:33:58 PM)

In this scenario the 'unit divide' option does not show, is this part of scenario design, or is there something that I should be re-setting ?

Some scenarios are designed so that the units aren't supposed to be able to divide.
An example would be the Soviet divisions in FITE.

Thanks, I'll add this to the scenario document:
Units cannot be subdivided and will not sub-divide due to combat results.

I wonder if there really were mountains in this area [original map pictured]:

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/14/2018 7:44:48 PM)

I'd say, no...

In another AH game there are not there. Not sure why they put them there; the Carpathians don't extend to Lemberg (I was there).

Nicholas Bell -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/14/2018 7:57:37 PM)

No mountains, just some hills which are no more than 200 meters above the surrounding terrain, unlike the Carpathian Mountains visible in the lower left corner. Perhaps "design for effect" to assist the Soviets?

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/14/2018 8:04:39 PM)

So, easy fix then... hills instead of mountains. :)

Signing off though... early day tomorrow;pre-dawn hike in my local woods'n hills.

It seems the Stuka is only an icon, representing a full Luftflotte. How this units work in the game? Only ground attack?

I haven't played Steve's scenario yet. I am sure there are house rules; e.g. like in the original game. My guess is, to use each counter for one attack in direct combat support each. That's how it worked in the boardgame (which I also have). So, check the scenario notes or let's wait for Onkel Steve.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (1/15/2018 11:58:34 AM)

A check of the Unit Report will show you what the Stuka units are good for. The original boardgame had rules to restrict their use because they gave an overwhelming three column shift on the Combat Results [2-1 became 5-1 when using a Stuka]. We can't do that in TOAW, so I haven't seen any reason for Stuka House Rules in this scenario.

Steve,

Are the graphics shown in your screenshots included with this scenario or is it something else you added?

All included in the zip at the top of the page. Install instructions also included [;)]

A very nice looking scenario. Fine graphics representation of the old classic.

Cheers

Zovs -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (4/26/2019 6:37:25 PM)

This is a really fun scenario, it's basic (no ranged artillery, and the air is pretty simple) but its still a very fun scenario.

This is my start of turn 4:

Thanks for creating this scenario.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (4/26/2019 8:59:40 PM)

I agree that it is a shipload of fun, and is pretty close to having a computer run a boardgame for us. Hint: You might want to turn OFF the Floating Objectives, because they really aren't necessary to be seen and kind of distract the eye from the beautiful map [;)]

Zovs -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (4/26/2019 9:54:35 PM)

Yes, I normally have them off, but turned them on for this screenshot.

tdavie -> RE: Russian Campaign 1941-1945 (6/19/2019 8:23:22 PM)

Thanks for this scenario. It was the first one I've downloaded after buying the game ~2 weeks ago and I'm playing it for the 3rd or 4th time. Avalon Hill come to life.

Let me add my voice to the praise. Thanks for an excellent scenario.
