10 May 1940 : the German Army launches its offensive against the West.
Its success is almost assured on the 20th May, when General Guderian's forces seize Abbeville, trapping most of the BEF and French Army in Belgium.
France's General Weygand, replacing Gamelin, decides to launch a counteroffensive to recapture Abbeville, defended by the German (Bavarian) 57th Infantry Division of General Blümm.
