3rd September 1941 The Summer campaigning season is almost over and the MLR has largely held firm excpet at two places. The following posts will serve as an over view of the current situation at the front from Karelia to Iran. Vyborg Area This region has been under attack since the Finnish declaration of War in July. Though Sortvala fell last week, the Finns have been kept away from Vyborg by a staunch defence. STAVKA strategy is based around a defence of attrition. The lessons of the 1939 Winter War have been learnt well and Finnish manpower resources, though hardy, are not deep. A line has been drawn that will act as the final line of retreat but so far the position holds. The 42nd and 55th Armies are so far doing well. River Narva A very quiet sector of the Front as the Germans decided to advance up the Pskov route. Tallin however was taken five days ago and the Germans have launched a new offensive, Beowolf if intell is to believed. Recon puts the German spearhead in this region at 20 Kms to the West of the city of Narva. The River Narva acts as the main line and with the Baltic Fleet nearby STAVKA is confident the Germans can be held here until the muddy season sets in. *Pskov - Opochka* An area of intense battles at either extreme of the line. The German advance has been stymied since the taking of Pskov with SSTK taking heavy losses and the 1st Panzer Division engaged in street battles. The woods around Lake Pskov has been excellent defenisve terrain. Depsite a German advance at the start of September STAVKA is confident that unless substantial resources are comitted here there will not be a breakthrough. AGN's main effort has been at Opochka where the bulge has gradually expanded. The battle has ebbed an flowed here and many German units have exhausted themselves in the woods to the East of Opochka. Though the line has been at risking of breaking twice the Guardsmen of the 1st Motorised Guard Division have served as the attacking thrust of countermoves that have kepet the Front solid. Idritsa - Vitebsk Another quiet sector of the Front lying between two focal points. The fighting here is relegated to bombardments and attempts to break out of Polotsk bridge head. Vitebsk - Mogilev The critical point of the Front. A German thrust developed into a full blown offensive with a large concentration of armour and motorised infantry. The line has buckled seriously twice but has not cracked. Depsite the fact that German units are 5 kms from the railhead at Gorki, it seems that the constant flow of reinforcements into the charnel house has propped up the front here. Orsha had to be abandonded as the strategic situaiton threatened an envelopement. The 103rd Tank Division was decimated holding back a joint attack by 19th and 17th Panzer Divisions. A second armoured thrust is pointing directly at Gorki. The vast amount of concentrated artillery in the region has kept the wolves at bay and the Smolensk - Rudnya rail spur has served as a great railhead to deposit reinforcements (this turn 4 Infantry divisions have been railed in and ready for action next turn). The next turn or two will decide the battle here and possibly the fate of the Front. I am confident I can hold him to a crawl as more and more units come online in the East. Kiev - Cherkassy A third major concern as AGS's penetration of the line grows larger. Indeed last turn they were 5 kms from breaking through into the rear. It was only a suicidal defence by militia units, strengthen by several tank battalions, that stopped the Panzer Grenadiers of the 16th Panzer Division. Reinforcements from South Western and Southern Fronts are being directed to the area with the 4th Airborne Corps ready to derail at Grebenkovskiy. So far there is no answer to the German superiority in armour in this area but once again our substantial artillery is making his infantry suffer heavy casualties. The Invasion of Iran I acitviated the TO last turn for the invasion of Iran together with the UK. This is what the scenario briefing states: quote: Turn 18. Theatre option available until turn 405 Option: Invade Iran Activate 44th Army in the Caucasus, form garrison mode. Activate Iranian Army 3rd Iranian Division Soviet supply: Tabriz in Soviet control, then +1 supply for the rest of the war. Text: Soviets attacks Iran in conjunction with the United Kingdom Description: In a joint venture the Commonwealth and the Soviet Union secured its flank by occupying Iran. A new secure lend lease route was then open known as the Persian corridor. I could do with that +1 supply considering the intensive fighting going on at the Front and a second Lend Lease route will only come in handy once Lend Lease activates (around Turn 40 I think). 55th Army is given the task of subjugating Iran with Tabriz the ultimate target.
