By October September 1955 two Egyptian tank divisions had reached the outskirts of the Libyan city of Sabha launching a full scale assault against the city, resulting in heavy Egyptian losses in men and material. On October 20th, the Egyptians had regrouped and tried again, this time successfully taking the city, but suffered heavy casualties. In the North the Egyptian 3rd Army had unsuccessfully tried to take the mountain passes, taking heavy losses. This defeat the Egyptians hoped would open the northern front thereby dooming Libyan defenses. The 3rd Army had to regroup before resuming the offensive.
