nhill40 -> Basic movement question (1/31/2018 1:25:02 AM)

I'm giving the manual a quick once-through before diving into some tutorials, and I have run into what I think is probably a very elementary question about movement costs.

Quoting from the manual:

"All Land units can cross Canals and Rivers at an additional Movement Cost. The presence of units with an Engineering Capability can reduce this cost, based on their corresponding Minor Ferry Capacity."

So, first things first, I'm consulting the map for the Korea Tutorial and the first thing I notice that throws me is that the rivers are depicted as running down the middle of the hexes, rather than along the hex edges. That begs the first question, which is at what point then would a unit be considered as crossing the river? When they enter the hex? When they leave the hex? Or is this particular scenario at such a scale where river crossing is not modeled?

Secondly, assuming I could determine at what point a given unit is deemed to be making a river crossing, what exactly does the "presence of units with an Engineering Capability" mean in this case? Does the unit with the engineering capability need to be making the river crossing simultaneously with the other units? Or remain stationary in the hex from which the river crossing originated from? Or be already across the river?

You pay a movement penalty entering a river hex. It can be reduced by having engineers in the hex in advance or as part of the unit moving into the hex.

You take an offensive penalty attacking out of a river hex.

Perfect, thank you!

How about attacking INTO a river hex? Does that come with a penalty?

Only if attacking from one river hex to a second.

They're designed to guide to through carious aspects of the game without starting a monster scenario.

Vielen Dank, Oberst - I'm definitely planning on running through your tutorials as my next step, I am just giving the manual a cursory once-through to help me understand some of the basic mechanics first. :)

Another question I ran into is some ambiguity (in my mind) about the "digging in" process. I think the fact that I *just* learned Panzer Campaigns is probably cluttering my thought on this one as, in PzC, you don't want one of your units "caught" in a "digging in" posture. I.e., in PzC, if your unit is current set as "digging in" and comes under attack, you'll incur a defense penalty.

Reading between the lines of the manual, it seems as though this is not the case in TOAW. If you set a unit to "dig in", it will continue to dig in until it brings the hex to "fortified" status (or you give it other orders). My current understanding though is once the unit brings the hex to a new level of entrenchment, it would enjoy those defensive benefits even if attacked by an enemy unit while still in "dig in" deployment mode.

Does that sound about right?

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Basic movement question (1/31/2018 6:57:35 PM)

That's correct; the last paragraph. They'll continue to dig-in.
